City firefighters could soon have new breathing apparatus.

At Mondayevening's city council meeting, city staff brought forward a recommendation that it buy 22 sets of the equipment from Nordique Fire Protection of Whitehorse for $137,060.

Nordique's bid was the lowest of the two that came in, at $6,230 per unit.

That compares to a bid of $6,271.05 per unit from Century Valen Industrial Maintenance and Safety Solutions of Edmonton.

The city has budgeted $140,000 for the whole purchase.

"As part of an on-going program, the fire department is upgrading and replacing its current Self Contained Breathing Apparatus,” notes the administrative report presented to council on the matter by the city's director of operations, Brian Crist.

"The replacement and upgrading will ensure that the higher level of safety to the firefighter with a longer duration air supply than the previous Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.”
