Dawson City district firefighters were quick to respond to an early-morning vehicle fire on the Dempster Highway early this morning.
The Yukon Fire Centre received a call for assistance from the RCMP just before 1 a.m. after three vehicles and a car carrier trailer were discovered on fire in the northbound lane of the highway at kilometre 150.
"Due to the proximity of the fire to the forest, we were called in to provide support,” said Chris Boland, Yukon duty officer for Wildland Fire Management.
"Despite the early-morning call, the firefighters were quick to respond to the situation and assist RCMP in extinguishing the fire.”
Dawson zone protection manager Dan Baikie and two firefighters responded with a brush engine vehicle. They were on scene for close to an hour applying foam and water to the engulfed vehicles.
While the vehicles were not salvageable, there were no injuries or fatalities.
Meanwhile, with several weeks of cool, damp weather, the fire danger rating remains low across the territory.
Earlier this week, close to 40 Yukon firefighters arrived back in the territory after providing help to British Columbia forest firefighters.
This season, there have been 119 fires in the Yukon, burning approximately 296,182 hectares of forest.
