A Sunday night stroll through the woods turned up two missing firearms and RCMP-issued body armour.
A local resident who asked not to be identified said this morning she and two others were walking through the trails behind the Northland Mobile Park at around 10 p.m. Sunday when one of them came across the two .22-calibre rifles and a backpack containing the armour in the bushes.
They called 911 and reported the find, with RCMP officers coming out to pick up the items.
Sgt. Roger Lockwood said this morning the guns and vest had been reported stolen by an auxiliary RCMP officer on June 23.
While the soft body armour, similar to a bullet-proof vest, had been assigned to the volunteer by the local detachment, the two firearms were his personal property, Lockwood said.
The guns were not loaded and there was no ammunition either reported stolen or found with the items, he said.
Every investigation is different and a decision is made on a case-by-case basis as to whether to inform the public, he said.
In this case, it was decided there would be no public notification, he said, adding the investigation continues.
While police continue looking at the case, the woman has been left wondering about a reward for the find.
She was informed last night it will be up to the owner of the items, rather than the RCMP, to decide whether to provide a reward.
'We were choked,' she said, noting the trio thought they were doing a good deed.
