A Whitehorse fire truck was pelted with a beer bottle early Saturday morning when firefighters arrived at Chadburn Lake to extinguish two bonfires.

Fire chief Clive Sparks said today the firehall was notified of the blazes at 2:10 a.m. by Whitehorse RCMP, who requested firefighters to attend to extinguish the fires.

'When the crew got there, there was a fairly large bush party going on, and as they pulled in, one individual started to throw things at the passenger side windshield,' Sparks told the Star.

A beer bottle ended up smashing the windshield. He expects the department will be lucky to get away with replacing it for less than $1,000.

'It is disappointing when people start to damage equipment, because we have that equipment to look after everybody, and when you damage it, it takes away from everyone.'

Sparks said there was also an axe removed from the back of the truck while firefighters were putting out the bonfires.

After the fire truck was targeted, firefighters backed off until police arrived to conduct crowd control.

Open fires are prohibited in the Chadburn Lake area, the chief pointed out.

He added the seasonal ban on open fires in the city is also now in effect until October.

RCMP Sgt. Ross Milward said no charges were laid as a result of the incident, though four youth were arrested for intoxication and spent the night in the drunk tank.

Officers are fairly certain they got the four responsible for the vandalism.

However, with no solid evidence to say who threw what from the crowd, it wasn't possible to lay charges, he said.
