A home on Ponderosa Drive in Porter Creek C was left with significant damage following an accidental fire Friday afternoon.

Whitehorse fire chief Kevin Lyslo said this morning firefighters were called to the scene at 3:07 p.m. after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the home.

A total of 12 firefighters were on the scene extinguishing the blaze, which began in a bedroom on the main floor.

The fire caused significant damage to the bedroom where it started, with smoke damage throughout the main floor of the bi-level house. There was no one inside at the time.

Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours, Lyslo said.

The blaze marked the first house fire Lyslo responded to as chief, though he had responded to house fires in his previous roles as deputy and acting chief.

He noted the firefighters on the scene did an excellent job dealing with the fire quickly.

Specific details about the cause were not released.
