A one-room cabin located on the Yukon River near Fox Farm Road was destroyed by fire late Tuesday night, causing approximately $35,000 in damage.

The blaze appears to have been caused by hot ashes from a wood stove left next to an outside wall of the cabin, according to information released by fire chief Warren Zakus.

A neighbour telephoned the Whitehorse Fire Department at around midnight Tuesday. Seven firefighters were on the scene for 3 1/2 hours, says the information sheet.

Because the cabin was not accessible by road, the firefighters had to deploy 365 metres (1,200 feet) of fire hose down a trail to reach the cabin and extinguish the fire.

The neighbouring Golden Horn Fire Department assisted by providing a water tanker.

Although the cabin was inhabited, no one was home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries.
