A fire which destroyed several businesses in Pelly Crossing early this morning is being called suspicious.

The RCMP say they were notified at approximately 1:10 a.m. of a fire at the Selkirk Center Store.

'On attending the scene, police and (the) Pelly Crossing Volunteer Fire Department found the local post office and tire shop engulfed in flames,' the police said in a release.

'After considerable efforts from firefighters and numerous community volunteers, the fire was successfully contained and the motel and store portions of the building were saved.

'Unfortunately, the post office, attached tire shop and bank were destroyed.'

Police plan to continue to investigate the cause of the blaze, which Pelly's fire chief has deemed suspicious.

According to the news release, two occupants of the motel escaped unharmed.

Mail and other materials saved from the fire, according to the release, are being stored at the Pelly Crossing RCMP detachment.
