Fire destroys house north of Whitehorse
The main house at the Falle Sod Farm north of Whitehorse burned to the ground Thursday afternoon.
The main house at the Falle Sod Farm north of Whitehorse burned to the ground Thursday afternoon.
Yukon fire marshall Dennis Berry said today by the time firefighters from the Hootalinqua Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene, just off the North Klondike Highway, the home was fully engulfed.
There were no injuries, but the house was destroyed, he said.
Ray and Vanessa Falle, and their 13- and eight-year-old sons, were living in the home.
Friends of the family have created a Facebook group, and a PayPal account has been established for those who want to provide financial assistance.
Berry said this morning he wasn't sure if anybody was home at the time the fire started.
Irma and husband Al Falle, a former Conservative member of the legislative assembly, also live on the property in a different home.
The fire marshall said the cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not being considered suspicious.
"We were on the scene until late last night, but we have not determined the cause,” he said.
Berry said when the emergency call came in at around 2 p.m., the indication was the fire was in the area of the front porch.
As far as he knows, the home was heated by an oil monitor with wood back up.
Berry said the four Hootalinqua volunteer firefighters arrived on site with their pumper truck and water tanker.
They used the mutual aid agreement and called for assistance from the Ibex Valley volunteer department, which responded with four firefighters and their pumper and tanker.
The Whitehorse Fire Department responded with two firefighters and a tanker.
Berry said the firefighters did a stellar job, and were having to move around in deep snow while using their tankers to shuttle water from the Hootalinqua and Ibex stations, and Whitehorse.
No other structures were damaged, he said.
Family members could not be reached for comment this morning, and it's unclear whether the home was insured.
