The cause of a fire which destroyed the Minto Park Ball Field concession stand and damaged fibre optic lines in Dawson City last Saturday night has been ruled as undetermined.
Dawson fire chief Jim Regimbal said Tuesday 15 firefighters were called to the concession stand at around 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
It took about three hours to put out the blaze, which began in the area of the washrooms.
The damage to fibre optic cables in the area meant that the 444 emergency number for ambulance services next door at the town’s new hospital was out.
That had local nurses permitting their cell phone numbers to be used for emergency health situations.
As well, the fire department directed people to the right number, Regimbal said.
He praised the quick work of community members to deal with calls on medical emergencies as well as the work of volunteer firefighters and others in dealing with the blaze.
“It’s incredible how everyone came together,” he said.
Northwestel Inc. and Yukon Energy also had crews out quickly working to ensure power was off where it needed to be and that the phone number for emergency medical services was restored as quickly as possible.
That number was back in service at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. It’s expected cable television service will be restored by the end of the week.
With the exception of the obvious impact on beer and food sales, the ball tournament that was happening over the long weekend was not affected.
Firefighters were able to salvage a few of the prizes that were being stored in the building, Regimbal said.
“The ball tournament did not suffer,” he said.
Firefighters and RCMP officers investigated throughout Sunday.
Regimbal said there was no evidence of arson, and the cause remains undetermined.
In the meantime, Dawson council had already been set to discuss the future of the concession stand last night with a contract award for the design of a new concession building to Across the Water Consulting for $20,000.
