Fire confirmed as cause of man's death in trailer

The person found dead inside a burnt-out trailer in the McIntyre subdivision early New Year's Eve

By Justine Davidson on January 7, 2010

The person found dead inside a burnt-out trailer in the McIntyre subdivision early New Year's Eve likely died because of the fire, according to a preliminary autopsy done on the body.

"Everything is consistent with having died in a fire,” the Yukon's chief coroner, Sharon Hanley, said today, before going on to describe the evidence typical of fire deaths.

"You find soot in the airway, the tissues are usually discoloured – a red colour.”

There were no other injuries on the body which would explain the man's death, she said.

The fire victim's family has asked the RCMP and the coroner's service not to release his name, Hanley added.

The deceased man's body was retrieved from the remains of a travel trailer which was gutted by fire on the morning of Dec. 31.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 5:42 that morning.

Fire department officials reported the fire had fully engulfed the trailer by the time emergency responders arrived.

It is not believed anyone else was in the trailer when the fire started, police said today.

As with all fires causing death, the blaze was initially treated as suspicious by investigators, but RCMP spokesman Sgt. Don Rogers said today no foul play is suspected.

"It was cold outside and the person may have being trying to make a fire to stay warm,” Rogers said.

The coroner's office is now waiting on a final autopsy and toxicology report which will test for alcohol and carbon monoxide in the fire victim's system, Hanley said.

Arn, for your information Moses had a good job, and had just come home for his 2 week R&R. To say something like he would be made into a hero, i guess he was a hero in his family's eyes. He was contributing to society cuz he did have a job, a family, was loved and cared for by people that knew him. You really should seek out anger management and if you cant say anything nice about someone who passed on like this, then don't say anything at all.
