The damage caused by a toaster fire Tuesday afternoon in Granger will likely keep residents out of their home for some time, according to Whitehorse Fire Department platoon chief Don McKnight.

He estimated the blaze caused about $75,000 in damage.

Fire crews have finished their investigation into the fire, which was contained to the Turner Crescent home’s second-floor kitchen.

Throughout that storey, there was extensive heat and smoke damage, McKnight said.

No one was home at the time.

Neighbours called the fire department at 1:30 p.m. when they saw smoke coming out of the windows.

Fire chief Kevin Lyslo said when crews arrived on scene, “it was starting to get going.”

Crews quickly did a “knockdown,” extinguishing the fire.

The hours-long investigation found the fire was accidental, and started in a toaster on the kitchen counter.

McKnight said crews planned to inspect the appliance today to determine if it was faulty.

The home’s residents stayed in a hotel last night.

“They’ll likely need to do some extensive gutting of the main floor,” said McKnight.
