A kitchen fire Wednesday afternoon caused $40,000 in damage to a house on the Alaska Highway near Fox Farm Road.

Fifteen Whitehorse firefighters were called to the blaze at 1:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the house, said platoon chief Rob Jack.

No one was home at the time.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Jack said.

Firefighters from the Golden Horn Fire Department were also on hand to help bring more water to the rural location in the city's south end.

Firefighters were on the scene for nearly three hours putting out the blaze and ventilating the smoke from the home.
