Yukon Wildland Fire Management crews are fighting significant blazes in two parts of the territory.

A wildfire was reported Wednesday near Gladstone Bay (across from Destruction Bay) on Kluane Lake.

Fire crews and other resources were dispatched, and the blaze is now contained. The total size of the fire is 0.3 hectares.

In the Watson Lake region, the evacuation alert from Kilometre 30 to 58 of the Robert Campbell Highway remains in effect.

The fire burning 40 kilometres northwest of the southeast Yukon community is approximately 9,008 hectares in size.

Due to suppression efforts, the fire has not crossed the Frances River, Wildland Fire Management said Thursday.

About 30 people and five helicopters are fighting the fire. Most of the buildings in the area are trappers’ cabins, with a couple of residences inhabited year-round.

Smoke may be visible in the Watson Lake area due to the wind shifting direction.

There are nine active fires around the Yukon, with the total number of hectares burned standing at 17,197.

There are currently no campfire bans in the territory.

As of Thursday, the fire danger rating was extreme for Champagne, Haines Junction, Iron Creek and Watson Lake.

The rating was high for Hasselberg, Jakes Corner, Ross River and Tom Creek.

Burning permits are suspended in any area where the fire danger rating is moderate or above.
