Members of the Whitehorse Fire Department doused a blaze in a second-floor room at the Chilkoot Inn late Monday morning.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., fire crews responded to a report of heavy smoke billowing from the upper floor of the Fourth Avenue building.

“Upon arrival, fire crews made an aggressive push to the upper floor and assisted occupants to safety while gaining entry into the affected suite,” the department said on its Facebook site.

“Upon entry, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire. Quick knockdown was achieved and overhaul began.

“One occupant of the suite was assessed by EMS for smoke inhalation-related problems, prior to being transported to Whitehorse General Hospital for further care.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, fire chief Jason Everitt told the Star this morning.

The blaze caused significant fire and smoke damage to the suite where it originated, he said. There was smoke and water damage to the second floor and water damage to the suite below, on the first floor.

“There was significant smoke and fire from the one suite,” the chief said.

The two occupants were able to vacate the room before firefighters arrivedtment.

While some of the firefighters focused on battling the blaze, Everitt said, others ensured the inn was cleared of all patrons.

A damage estimate was not available, the chief explained.

Some of the inn’s occupants were allowed to return to their suites after a couple of hours, he said.

A full crew of between eight and 10 firefighters responded with the rescue truck, the aerial truck, a pumper and support vehicles.

Firefighters were on the scene for about 2 1/2 hours.

“Thanks to Whitehorse RCMP, Bylaw and paramedics for also responding to this event,” the fire department said.

(A) Fell asleep with a lit cigarette, (B)passed out while knocking over the blow torch used for smoking crack out of a broken lightbulb or (C)was this just a natural, regular everyday daytime fire.
I’ll go with (C)

Hmm. All the SA clients were scheduled to be moved to the new liberal hotel aka High Country soon. I would definitely classify this as suspicious.
