Mayor Dan Curtis says the results of the Point-in-Time count show work needs to continue on addressing homelessness in the city.
Mayor Dan Curtis says the results of the Point-in-Time count show work needs to continue on addressing homelessness in the city.
The PiT count saw volunteers go out into the community over a 24-hour period in April in an effort to get a “snapshot” of the homelessness situation.
The Whitehorse count, led by the Council of Yukon First Nations, was one of several that happened across the country, with funding from the federal government.
Over that period, it was found a total of 256 were homeless or at risk of being homeless, organizers reported Friday.
That number included 44 living on the streets or in places not meant for human habitation, 33 staying in shelters, 42 who had temporary accommodations or places that lack security of tenure and 137 listed “at-risk” where their current housing is precarious or doesn’t meet health and safety standards.
Curtis described 256 as “an unacceptably high” number of people facing homelessness in the city, while also pointing out the true numbers could actually be higher, as there may have been some who were reluctant to speak with volunteers who were doing the count.
The good news, he said, is work is continuing to come up with solutions to address the issue, with the city and Kwanlin Dun First Nation working together.
Among the initiatives is a youth forum the two governments are planning to host, which comes after forums last year looking at the issue.
Discussions on the matter are also ongoing with the Yukon government, Curtis stressed.
While the initial results of the PiT count were released Friday, further analysis of the information gathered is set to be done, with more detailed results to be released later this summer.

Last year the City Mayor jacked our cost of living by 6.3% on Jun 17, 2016 at 5:03 pm
Did anyone get 6% raise?

Hey June, that was well done. Great points, as even I had been complacent on those camping legit to survive.
Many of the folks I see have been touring town for some decades.
"Some men you just cannot reach, and you get what we have here today"
That goes for our King Dan and his band of merry men too not just those homeless.
I'd never ever PC a Cool Hand Luke quote, as PC should be filed in the trash

I have completely lost confidence in mayor and council.
If you follow almost any issue closely and attend council meetings you will see half baked discussion and it seems that council and attending city staff are just fumbling around. They seem incapable of really understanding issues and of course they demonstrate incredibly poor judgement.
The city is in trouble.

Well Mayor Curtis, keep jacking those taxes and there may be a few more of us out there without a roof.
There was no distinction made in the homeless count regarding homeless because they are long term alcoholic's and simply can not be housed anywhere, and the working poor living in tents in friends yards or camping at Robert Service or Wolf Creek. There was no distinction made between those who would like a roof, and those who prefer the freedom spoken of by Kris Kristofferson.. Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. There are those who choose to do their own thing, no matter what that is, and pick up meals at Salvation Army. While i think of them as poor, they always have cigarettes (at what? 16. a pack now?).
As politically incorrect as it is these days to say this, long term alcoholics have lost control of their bowels, they throw up on the walls, they haven't seen a bath in living memory, nor are they interested in one. These folks should have a cot and clean clothes when needed or asked for at Salvation Army or build another building for them and leave them alone to live their lives as they choose.
Yet another group needs way more than a roof, physical and mental illness play into their life style and they have more societal needs than some of the others.
Others? Work like dogs for 12. an hour and just can't make ends meet... so where is affordable housing for them?
This article says everyone is talking.. thats nice. Everyone has been talking for a long long time... What might really help is the new Sally Anne.. and i always think less talk, more action might produce results.

Oh my god, another photo op to say the same thing we've all known for years now. So pathetic, stop talking and do something.

"Work continuing to come up with solutions"
Give me a break - this means absolutely nothing - smoke and mirrors. Nothing is happening and and nothing will happen. Take some of the money that goes to "beautify" Whitehorse for the tourists and actually help the marginal folks in our community.
Here is another way of looking at it from a tourism point of view. Do you want the tourists to think that we do not look after our homeless people.????

Hogwash!!!!!!!!
The City Fathers and all the First Nations have known about this problem for years and have done nothing.
Do we now have to do another study while people die on the streets or do we actually do something!!!
More detailed results to be released later this summer - more smoke and mirrors!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what else is "unacceptably high"?
Is the annual tax increases to fund your socialism...
the sheer amount of high end windbags feeding from the trough on our CoW payroll.
The absolute epic level of entitlements the nobles have.
Crime in your sty...
Lemme guess you are going to save everybody with civic dollars, our money?
