The City of Whitehorse will host its seventh annual family New Year's Eve event tonight at the Canada Games Centre, and it's billed as a "super” evening.
The super hero-themed party will kick off at 6 p.m. with free swimming, with the inflatable, and skating.
There will also be themed game stations, crafts at the literacy centre and live music until the fireworks grand finale at 9 p.m.
Michael Brooks will start off the live music and dance at 6:30, followed by Soir de Semaine at 7:45.
The city's family New Year's Eve party "provides families with an opportunity to ring in the new year together in a fun and active way,” said Krista Mroz, the community program supervisor.
The event "is a great opportunity for the city to give back to the community,” she added.
Mroz noted the help the city is receiving from local sponsors Softball Yukon, Whitehorse Beverages and Subway, as well as all their volunteers.
"It takes a great number of volunteers to be able to host an event like this,” Mroz said.
"Everything from setting up the decorating to hosting the games and activities that we play. People who are helping to provide security to set off the fireworks. We couldn't do it without the volunteers that we have.”
In previous years, the centre has hosted some 2,000 to 3,000 Yukoners for New Year's Eve, Mroz said.
Families are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite super heroes to enjoy tonight's festivities.
But she warned parking may be tight due to the event's popularity, and suggested vehicle-pooling or transit as alternatives.

I love the CGC.. I don't know how the City ever got so lucky as to have the incredible staff that provide the services offered at CGC.
The front desk staff are amazing as are the instructors, games management folks and pool instructors and life guards.
When CGC says they have something for everyone, they are not kidding. Babysitting/day care for a young mum to be able to go to the gym, equipment for handicapped to use the gym and pool, seniors programs, youth programs, literacy programs.. and of course.. Holiday family programs.. Whitehorse is so fortunate to have this facility.
Anyway, off topic..but an opportunity to thank everyone at CGC, at Whitehorse Star for covering the 'good news' too, and Happy New Year to all.
