City council has approved an additional $2.3 million in this year’s capital budget to cover the cost of emergency repairs to the escarpment due to mudslide damage.

The city has already incurred more than $1.6 million in costs.

As well, it’s estimated an additional $750,000 will be needed to cover outstanding invoices and additional work that’s required.

The vote at Monday’s council meeting in support of the additional funding was unanimous.

“The majority of the remaining work is related to débris cleanup of landslides, and completion of the containment berm on Robert Service Way,” says the administrative report to city council.

It says there will be a project brought forward later this year to update the overall escarpment geo-hazard study.

While there is no indication of what percentage of the costs can be recovered from the Yukon and federal governments, intergovernmental discussions around the issue are underway, says the report.

City manager Jeff O’Farrell told council the city is working with the government to review the snow dumping practices at the airport and to assist with design of the airport expansion.

Snow melt from the airport may have contributed to the mudslides, O’Farrell told council.

On April 30, approximately 2,000 to 3,000 cubic metres of material were released in a landslide that covered a portion of Robert Service Way and the Millennium Trail near the Robert Service Campground.

The slide forced the closure of the Robert Service Way for several weeks.

The administrative report notes subsequent landslides of varying magnitude over the following six weeks were also observed.

Some of the subsequent slides were minor in nature but others were significant and impacted nearby infrastructure, including a small downtown park.

@ White as a Rainbow- it just gets better n better don't it?

We could paint the roads as rainbows and just have no crosswalks, utopia complete...
No, I have nothing against rainbow crosswalks, just rainbow politics. The alphanumeric community is the most toxic community among every demographic, who not only cannot accept themselves, but will not be happy until no one can accept themselves. Change my mind. Bunch of anti-fa marxists and walking contradictions. You want me to accept you, ACCEPT ME.

Oh believe me when I say Josey, I don't have a lick of confidence, some days I am just more patient than others, I like to throw a positive into the mix from time to time. I was goading them to handle this better carrying forward. Maybe I should tried reverse psychology, they love that s*it.

Absolutely Josey - “White”horse? C’mon man - How much more colonial can a name get then when the word “White” is used to denote ownership, control, and dominance - rapids! My ass!!

We could rename the city Rainbow-horse to reflect our spirited commitment to diversity. Princess Laura could have a wand (perhaps a sceptre?), a crown, and some sprinkle dust for her pronouncements…

All that is required of its citizenry is “belief”… Believe it and you can be it in the city where reality meets delusion… Come experience the magic and the mystery, and if you’re lucky, her majesty herself will sprinkle a little magic dust your way…

Wait a minute - Rainbow? A rainbow is simply white light refracted - Yes, from whiteness comes diversity - How messed up is that?

In the land of hypocrisy on Jul 28, 2022 at 7:55 am

What an eyesore! Any plans to remediate this ugliness? Wow - We got the Boulevard of weeds, garbage, off road tire tracks, and stunted, struggling roses with mixed use Boulevard filler from asphalt to trash - A city in decline for sure… Complete with a Riverside drive of an ugly rock berm - WTF - Where is the finish work here?

Then there are the spit trails throughout the downtown core - Wilderness City? No, although there is a lot of wild downtown there is nothing “wildernessy” in the City of Gob!

Cabot needs a new habit! Rather than signal she/her/their (Sorry Laura - You did not list your pronouns) virtue from the very pulpit from which systemic racism was created, implemented, and maintained!

Nice try Laura - But there are many of us who refuse to accept responsibility for the consequences of political action and inaction - A good leader would not castigate its republic for political points.

Hey Mitch...an intelligent council?
Kinda like...military intelligence.
...an honest politician.
...in particular, a ethical Liberal.
...a rational SJW.
...objective journalist.
...true north strong and free.

I get your points, but as a baseline...should not ever expect and council (especially here in commi country) to exercise any intellect at all.
They are programmed to be woke, buried in racist regulations that they created, to ever be present in the cognitive real world.

Our city is falling apart, and there is a big floating dock made outta that evil plastic at Long Lake?
A lake that never needed a dock, has one...thanks to the never ending depth our civic wizards will burrow into YOUR pockets.

I suggested many times folks should never underestimate the civic system.
Many could care less, many have a vested interest in the current state of decomposition, many are getting exactly what they voted for.
...a decomposing, crime rife, epically polarized, political blowhole saturated, caste society...formerly known as Whitehorse.

As Liberal and Democratic run cities and towns are, cesspools
Give the lust for all things alleged to be woke, surprised our team red civic wizards have not demanded a name change, a flag drop to raise another.
...a liberal red one, with a big yellow star, to demonstrate the admiration team red has via Emperor Blackface...for the other team red.

Complete WASTE of money, look around folks, steep hills EVERYWHERE! Are we going to install these barricades all over town? Didn't think so.. if that road was opened after clean up, 98% of drivers would continue to use it without even thinking about it..

The City is sugar coating the risk of escarpment slides.
No engineer would or should say the current situation is safe.

It's time to plan and fund the required work before lives are lost.

Proactive pragmatism is appreciated I am sure. Question. Are you purchasing materials now to store for anticipated maintenance? That is what an intelligent council would do while the price is, tenable.
