A former Whitehorse teacher has pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault and two counts of indecent assault against a female student.

A former Whitehorse teacher has pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault and two counts of indecent assault against a female student.

The pleas were entered by Paul Thomas Dueling’s lawyer, Richard Fowler, this morning.

Dueling did not appear in court, and Fowler appeared by phone.

Justice of the Peace Sharman Morrison-Harvey presided.

Fowler indicated that he still needs some of the disclosure from the Crown. That said, he felt it’s imperative to set a trial date.

He was prepared to enter pleas on behalf of his client and make defence elections. He entered the not-guilty pleas and elected for a trial by judge in territorial court.

Morrison-Harvey accepted the pleas and elections. She set the next date as next Thursday morning to schedule the trial.

The alleged offences are reported to have taken place between September 1981 and December 1986.

Comment to Fossil Wood-Shame on YOU! on Aug 27, 2019 at 8:02 pm

From Fossil Wood: "I was in pcjss when this was going on and yes it was openly talked about, everyone knew about it. But why now? Can't make ends meet so you're gonna try and get cash now. In no way do I think what happened was right, 30 years ago."
YOU ARE #$%'d up to put a comment about the victim not being able to make ends meet and implying she's doing this for a money grab! What a loser comment--clearly you have no understanding of pedophiles and what she's been through! Ever been raped, Fossil Wood? With people like you making judging statements when somebody is brave enough to disclose, no wonder victims do not come forward! I suppose you think Theo Flurry and Sheldon Kennedy also were lying/money grab? I too went to all three schools that the victim attended. Everybody knew, people did say something and NOTHING WAS DONE!--good ole Yukon education! He wasn't only in trouble for what he did to her--he treated other students with disrespect and physical abuse too and his former students openly talk about that!
There is a case on CBC radio regarding band teachers and coaches at Bell High--and the pedophile teachers who preyed upon their students at that school were also brought to the principal's attention with NO ACTION. So the teachers got away with 30 years of abusing multiple students, who tried to say something and were ignored. The Bell High case stems from the 70's, 80's and early 90's and charges were only laid in 2016! You think those multiple teenage boy victims came forward so many years later for a money grab? Think again! The wrongs need to be righted!!! Justice must be served for crimes now or then!!

Wtf on Aug 27, 2019 at 9:14 am

Sooo many stories these days of poor young unsuspecting little girls being used and abused by disgusting pieces of sh*t. If what "Make It Right" says is true that everyone and their dog knew about this and did absolutely nothing, that's equally disgusting. Let's call back the principals of the day, the premier of the day, the teachers, the DM of Education of the day.....let's find out what they knew and hold them accountable! Sick, sick, sick.

Dear Jimmy H Wood - A possible reason that there is only one comment preceding yours is that the Star moderates and/or edits the submissions to conform to its standards.

Another possible reason is that the justice system does not take sexual assault seriously because it happens so routinely in the Yukon and in the North more generally. People have given up hope that anything resembling justice will be done.

Yet another, the powers that be have advanced the idea that you do not have to know anything you just need to be nice. Therefore, be nice, but most of all, remain ignorant. If people are ignorant then there can be no real effective commentary.

YG is itself a systemic failure that is unwilling and unable to self-correct. Most people know this and recognize the futility of attempting to effect meaningful change through reason. Why waste the energy? Why comment?

Why is there only one comment on this story? I would think that there would be outrage over these allegations given the circumstances and duration of the said assault. Is the accused known now as a good person that the victims story cannot be credible? Not only was this an assault on a child, it was a systemic failure at the Department of Education.

Make it right!! on Aug 22, 2019 at 8:13 pm

Those of us who went to school when this was happening knew this was happening. There had better be witnesses called, including teachers who knew, Yukon Dept. officials who knew, and Deuling and the victim. Absolutely insane that this went on and was never dealt with! The victim deserves the best lawyer in Canada to deal with this case. Out of the three schools the victim went to, Jack Hulland, PCJSS, and FH, 2 out 3 of her principals was charged and convicted of pedophilia. The wrongs need to be righted.
