To mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation last Friday, Whitehorse RCMP hoisted an orange Every Child Matters flag in front of their detachment on  Fourth Avenue.

The flag was a gift from the Kwanlin Dün First Nation (KDFN).

Chief Doris Bill and elder Judy Gingell presented it to detachment commander Insp. Lindsay Ellis and Cpl. Adam Lightfoot, the non-commissioned officer in charge of the Kwanlin Dün Policing Unit.

The flagpoles in front of the building are beside the  Heart Garden, another visual symbol of the Whitehorse RCMP’s commitment to reconciliation and strengthening relationships with Yukon First Nations.

“Shä̀w níthän to the Yukon RCMP for raising this flag in front of the Whitehorse detachment for the first time to show their commitment to moving forward in a good way,” Bill said.

“It’s important that this message, Every Child Matters, is seen and heard throughout our community, so that every child and every citizen knows that our shared future will be brighter than our past.”

“Yukon RCMP are honoured and humbled by this gift from KDFN as we take action towards reconciliation,” said Chieft Supt. Scott Sheppard, the commanding officer of the Yukon RCMP.

“Having this flag flying in front of Yukon RCMP Headquarters was a symbol of more than just our commitment to safer and healthier First Nations communities.

“The fact that the flag was a gift from Kwanlin Dün First Nation reflects our shared vision towards relationship building,” Sheppard said.

“Reconciliation is not a single event or a task to be completed,” said a statement about the flag presentation.

“It is a commitment to fostering a respectful relationship with First Nation peoples and communities, done in good faith, honour and fairness.

“Each positive act of reconciliation should not be viewed as an accomplishment unto itself, but as a small step along a continuum. Effectively, reconciliation is a lens through which we monitor our decisions and actions, always with a view to the future.”

The Every Child Matter flag was flown from sunup to sundown last Friday.

It temporarily replaced the Indigenous Ensign which has been flown since the planting of the Heart Garden in June.

Dear bonanzajoe on Oct 6, 2022 at 8:41 pm:

Is that ‘emphasis’ as in mostly Indigenous children or, do you mean ‘only’ Indigenous children? And if it is reference to ‘only’ Indigenous children is that raycism?

Is it still raycist when people say All Lives Matter?

Its like we are losing a common language because people are being taught to speak from their feels… This is why stratified categorical division is so necessary to Liberalist Ideology… It concentrates power in the hands of those with the ability to define objective reality through the subjective lens of an authority perpetrated in the name of some aspirational common good that remains elusive to the provocation of a manifest latency…

There is always more work to be done!
Democracy, the political system that allows its adherents to destroy that same system from within through use of internecine polemics.

I gotta say - This stuff you people call politics in the Yukon looks like a scene from, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Seriously, it is well established research that Liberalism is mental illness but they all look and sound like Brad Pitt in the movie 12 Monkeys - It really is some batshyt crazy ass medication non-compliant behaviour by all of them, especially KW and SS… WTF!?!?

@ bonanzajoe

Oh so true. The rest of the children don't matter - that is made pretty damn clear. We are just the "cash cow settlers".

@Shifting Agendas: Remember now, the whole emphasis here is on indigenous children.

Just a little while ago it was racist to say “every” child matters - Make up your minds.

The dead are never going to be allowed to rest in peace. It's too bad that there is so much money, billions, attached to this issue that no one is willing to put it into history books with the other tragedies of the past, and move on into a future.
