Former Dawson mayor Glenn Everitt and former town manager Scott Coulson have been given until Oct. 23 to decide how they will proceed on charges of breach of trust, fraud and theft over $5,000.

Crown prosecutor David McWhinnie said this morning Everitt was in court Tuesday in Dawson for his first appearance on the charges while Coulson was represented by lawyer Emily Hill, who was appearing on behalf of another lawyer involved in Coulson's defence.

Coulson now lives in Chilliwack, B.C.

The case was adjourned until Dawson's next circuit court in October to give each of the parties more time to decide how they will proceed, McWhinnie said.

Judge Heino Lilles also ordered a publication ban on evidence in the case, McWhinnie said.

Everitt, 43, faces two counts each of breach of trust by a public officer, fraud and theft over $5,000 between 1996 and 2004, while Coulson is charged with three counts of the theft charge and one each of the other two between 2001 and 2004.

This morning Everitt said while there was some discussion around moving the case to Whitehorse for a Sept. 13 date, he was opposed to it.

'Why should I have to go to Whitehorse,' he said.

Not only would it be inconvenient for him, but Everitt also noted he wants the matter to be dealt with in his community so residents can see and judge him for themselves.

He has yet to get disclosure on all the charges and expects it will be December before the case moves forward, given the time he will need to go over the disclosure package and decide how he wants to proceed.

While Everitt is unable to make the Oct. 23 court appearance, there will be someone there making an appearance on his behalf, he said.
