David Laxton, the Speaker of the Yukon legislature, has invited all Yukoners to join him late this afternoon for the second annual Speaker's Reception in support of the Yukoners' Cancer Care Fund.

"Cancer is a terrible disease which has, unfortunately, touched us all. I am honoured to support this important fund, that has already helped to provide comfort to Yukoners,” said Laxton.

The fund was established at the Yukon Hospital Foundation in 2013 thanks to the generosity of the community and the commitment of volunteers who want to see enhanced support for Yukoners facing cancer and their families.

It's supported by volunteer-led events and initiatives, as well as donations. Monies received for this fund can only be used to support cancer care and cancer patients in the Yukon.

"Even with our generous medical system, the hardship due to cancer diagnosis and treatment can be significant,” said Fund Champion Geraldine Van Bibber.

"Through the Yukoners' Cancer Care Fund, we can do our small part to help ease the burden on Yukon patients and families by contributing a financial gift.”

Annually, the fund offers a limited number of monetary gifts to Yukoners requiring financial support as a result of their cancer diagnosis or treatment.

It joins Karen's Fund, established in 2000 to help Yukon women undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and Run For Mom, an annual

community-based run/walk event, in its commitment to raise funds, awareness and support for programs and services for Yukoners facing cancer.

Laxton's reception will begin at 5:30 this afternoon in the atrium of the Yukon Government Main Administration Building.

The evening will feature live music, appetizers and live and silent auctions. Admission is by donation and charitable receipts will be issued.
