INSTABILITY REMAINS EVIDENT – The escarpment, an empty Robert Service Way and the latest mudslide are seen April 8. Signs of movement continue, the city said Wednesday.
The escarpment along Robert Service Way continues to show signs of movement at the location of the April 8 slide, the City of Whitehorse said Wednesday.
The escarpment along Robert Service Way continues to show signs of movement at the location of the April 8 slide, the City of Whitehorse said Wednesday.
“The rest of the escarpment is very active,” the city said in a short statement.
As part of their ongoing monitoring, crews were on-site Wednesday morning.
“The volume of groundwater exiting the escarpment is rapidly accelerating as a result of increased precipitation and warming temperatures,” the city said.
“We would like to remind residents of the importance of staying out of the areas that have been closed, and encourage residents to reach out if they have any questions or concerns.”
Due to the current conditions and the rehabilitation work that must be done, no date has been set for Robert Service Way’s reopening.
The April 2022 slide nearby closed the artery for seven weeks.
The city has not indicated whether it will eliminate bus fares while the road is closed, as it did in 2022.
There is no scheduled date for the free bus service provision in the Confidence and Supply Agreement the governing Liberals and NDP signed on Jan. 31 to ensure the Liberals retain power until at least 2025.
