Eleventh death, 41 new COVID cases reported
The Yukon’s COVID-19 outbreak continues to worsen, with the announcement of another fatality.
The Yukon’s COVID-19 outbreak continues to worsen, with the announcement of another fatality.
Late Friday afternoon, Dr. André Corriveau, who the territorial government identified as the Yukon’s acting chief medical officer of health, reported another death of a Yukon citizen from COVID-19.
This brings the total to 11 since the first death was reported in November 2020.
“My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of this individual. Out of respect, we will not be releasing any additional information,” said Corriveau, who at one time was the chief medical officer of the Northwest Territories.
There are currently 156 active cases of COVID-19 in the territory, with 41 cases confirmed since noon last Wednesday through Friday. Case numbers from the weekend were not available from the government early this afternoon.
One of the 41 latest cases reported is a resident of Mayo, one is a resident of Pelly Crossing, seven live in Watson Lake, and 32 are residents of Whitehorse.
These numbers are based on the residence of the person and may not accurately reflect their current physical location.
There have been 1,176 cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in the Yukon since March 2020; 998 of these cases have recovered.
On Saturday, the government enacted a new state of emergency to allow for new temporary measures to “rapidly decrease the transmission of COVID-19 and ensure the territory’s health care capacity is not overwhelmed.”
Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn has authorized new ministerial orders under the Civil Emergency Measures Act that came into effect Saturday.
Under the masks order, mask use is required by all persons five years of age or older in all public places.
• Mandatory masking is required in all indoor public settings and in outdoor public settings where physical distancing cannot be maintained. Mask use is required in vehicles when there are occupants from more than one household.
• Masks are required at all times inside schools, including when students are in classrooms and seated at their desks as well as all indoor school settings outside the classroom, such as common areas and hallways.
• Participants in high-intensity physical activities which cannot reasonably be done while wearing a mask are exempt from the mandatory masking requirement.
For example, for curling or low-intensity exercise classes, masks need to be worn but not for hockey, soccer or basketball. Masks do need to be worn when not actively engaged in playing the sport.
• Limits on personal gatherings to 10 people from a maximum of two households if all eligible people are vaccinated; household members only if any eligible people are unvaccinated.
• Limits on organized gatherings, including conferences and weddings: indoor gatherings limited to 25 individuals with proof of vaccination required; outdoor gatherings limited to 50 individuals.
• Limits on seated ticketed events, including arts and sporting events: maximum 50 per cent of venue capacity or 25 individuals, whichever is lower, with proof of vaccination required; seating limited to individual households with physical distancing between households.
• Limits on faith-based and cultural gatherings: maximum 50 per cent of venue capacity or 25 individuals, whichever is lower, with proof of vaccination required; seating limited to individual households with physical distancing between households.
• Restrictions on restaurants, bars and nightclubs: proof of vaccination required for table service with a limit of six individuals per table; no counter service, no moving between tables and no dancing.
• Restrictions on gyms, fitness and yoga studios and classes: maximum 50 per cent of venue capacity or 25 individuals, whichever is lower, with proof of vaccination required.
• Restrictions on personal services: proof of vaccination required.
• Limits on other indoor public spaces: maximum 50 per cent of venue capacity or 25 individuals, whichever is lower.
• Individual workplaces may be required to temporarily close under Corriveau’s direction.
The new measures will be in place until at least Dec. 3. Corriveau’s office will continue to actively assess the risk levels in the territory associated with COVID-19 transmission and adjust recommendations as necessary.
Corriveau is recommending that travel among communities, and between communities and Whitehorse, be avoided until further notice.
Some local businesses are reporting the new measures aren’t sitting well with a certain percentage of customers.
The Burnt Toast Café on Second Avenue was one reporting some problems on its social media accounts.
“So after sharing with all of you the struggles businesses are facing we received a message stating that this person would not support us if we followed the ‘draconian measures’ set out by government.
“Why would someone go to the trouble of giving a business a hard time like this? It is sad that these protocols are dividing citizens this way but at Burnt Toast we are committed to keeping our staff and customers as safe as possible. We will be implementing the measures set out starting today.
“Just so people are clear, if you’re planning on coming onto my business page to call us discriminatory for refusing to allow unvaccinated people I will not engage with you; I will simply delete your comments and block you so don’t waste your time.”
The G&P on Main restaurant was another business making some firm comments on social media about not accepting bullying and harassment from customers.
“For anyone who berates/ harasses businesses for following MANDATED protocols…. Well, we don’t need any of that nonsense. We’ve have enough to deal with throughout this pandemic. Massive staff shortages, being mandated to shut dining rooms, having food prices sky rocket, and most importantly worrying constantly that our staff and customers are safe! The list goes on.
“So if you are causing a ruckus, please kindly carry on elsewhere and all the best to you and yours. We need to survive this!
“Also for any of the naysayers, please remember: no business owner wants any of this. Such as checking passports, etc. That’s a full-time job in itself that’s costly and didn’t exist before.
“Not to mention businesses in B.C. are getting fined 100s of dollars a day for not following mandated protocols,” G&P added.
“Their business licences are being stripped from them and getting injunctions through the courts! This is real, people. Do your homework!
“Lastly, PLEASE, by all means, if you can do better, open your own restaurant, invent your own rules. See how that plays out. Like, come on.
“I’m sorry, folks, but we keep hearing these stories of such bullying and it’s beyond unacceptable and disheartening . Please be kind, we are all doing our very best to keep afloat!”

I think not. There is more than enough that are sitting around doing zip, oh like the department of tourism. Dust them off, some quick training, pass an OIC to give them the authority and sling them out there. If you feel like contributing to the gov't's war chest then make a donation yourself to the general revenue fund.

If you want government workers at every business, are you ok with a tax increase to pay for all of these new government employees and their union benefits? The bigger the government the better, right?

The restaurants should push back against Government. It is not their job to collect Data for the GOVY. Tell the government to get one of their employees in there to collect the data. Then the blow back would be aimed at the correct people. I don't blame the businesses, however they are caving to pressure. Chambers of Commerce should be the ones working for them. What next, when you take your car to the shop or go through a drive through they ask to see your drivers licence and insurance? Welcome to a dictatorship.

Fellow Yukoners,
You’re asking the wrong questions.
How did we get into another lockdown situation? The stats are there. This is worse than ever before.
They lifted nearly all restrictions back in August. Just in time to raise spirits before the election(s).
Who ran in those elections?
And who did you elect?

I apologize for my previous comment being harsh. From what I can tell, you just need to show your immunization portfolio if you would like to sit in a food place and take your mask off.
The non-gmo humans can apparently still get takeout if they come in wearing a mask, they can even go get a coffee. If this is truly the case I do not think it warrants a boycott of a business or having a hissy fit. I feel bad for the business owner that has to be the unpayed enforcement of the latest violation of civil liberties. Shame on the ones that are making them do this, and great job rushing out nonsensical unclear mandates with little warning.

After reading these comments I am wondering what this pandemic has done to create the current attitudes about how people are suffering or dying, they are no longer people with families and loved ones left behind, but in the true sense of the word, they have become statistics to be used to argue or support a political position. As a society we are loosing our humanity.
My condolences to all who have lost a loved one to COVID and all the political screw ups made along the way. They really are making it up as they go along.

The president of Bayer’s Pharmaceuticals Division told international experts during the World Health Summit that the mRNA COVID-19 shots are indeed “cell and gene therapy” marketed as “vaccines” to be palatable to the public.
“We are really taking that leap [to drive innovation] – us as a company, Bayer – in cell and gene therapies … ultimately the mRNA vaccines are an example for that cell and gene therapy. I always like to say: if we had surveyed two years ago in the public – ‘would you be willing to take a gene or cell therapy and inject it into your body?’ – we probably would have had a 95% refusal rate,” stated Oelrich.

Its about time that some people (read antivaxers) learn there is a big difference between "rights" and "privileges" . It is not your "right" to go into any business and demand that they disobey the law. It is a "privilege" to be able to go into any business, facility, home or wherever you may want to go. If you go into most businesses they have signs that read "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone". This includes those thoughtless selfish people who think they are smarter than the doctors and scientists who are doing their best to get us out of the situation we are presently in.
I would guess that most of the "anti" people are the same ones who object to seat belts, security inspections at the airport, speed limits, red lights, stop signs and any other thing they feel restricts their "rights" Here is some news for you. The world is not going to change for you just because you don't like it. Grow up.

I find it disrespectful the way you speak about these people like somehow they are expendable or not a valued member of society or someone’s loved family member.
For the non believers, I wish you could take a tour of our hospital’s covid ward.
Something that gets lost in all this divisiveness is the tireless work of our amazing healthcare workers. They are truly heroes in this situation.
Maybe you should read Dr. Ryan Warshawski’s CBC interview. I realized in his discussion that I was at one time vaccine hesitant, and questioning whether or not to vaccinate my daughter with the new HPV vaccine. I had read misleading information online that made me question this vaccination when I had never ever before.
The thing that changed my mind was a discussion with one of our amazing nurses at the Whitehorse health centre. She answered any questions or concerns I had in a very respectful way.
If you are hesitant, especially about receiving an MRNA vaccine please speak with your physician. Maybe there is another more traditionally developed Covid vaccine choice for you.
I’ve lost a friendship over the discussion about vaccines. I wish I hadn’t been judgemental and more understanding at the time.

They won't be releasing any information about this or any other "Covid" death because they have no respect for the rule of law, citizenship rights, or the public's right to know that their designated leaders are conducting themselves in a rational and responsible manner. (Which they clearly are not).
How old were the dead, and what other medical factors contributed to their deaths other than Covid?
Prove that these deaths were BY Covid rather than WITH Covid.

First, no one believes the government covid numbers anymore because of the lack of details.
Even if all were double vacced, the covid spread would be the same because both the vacced and unvacced carry covid equally.
There are credible reports that animals carry covid too, the latest being deaths of 3 snow leopards and multiple deer covid carriers in the US.
Instead of firing the unvacced, all should be regularly tested especially in sensitive workplaces like hospitals, senior facilities, schools etc.
By all means, practice covid avoidance like social distancing, masks, avoiding crowds, hand washing etc. even by government restrictions if necessary.
Let us not forget to follow the money in keeping the covid ball rolling neglecting other serious causes of sickness and deaths.
Pfizer made 36 billion dollars just on covid vaccines.

Critical information is withheld by the chief medical officer about these 11 deaths associated with covid. Many Yukoners already know that at least some of the deceased had severe pre-existing conditions that most likely caused their death, which ends up being labelled as a ‘covid death’ only because they happened to test positive for covid. We asked, but never received an answer as to how many cycle threshold are used in the analysis of these PCR tests for covid.
Normally, public health statistics routinely provide detailed information about deaths from all causes, without revealing patient identity. A chief medical officer that recommends drastic restrictions and vax mandates on a population has an obligation to tell us exactly what the risks from the illness are.
We need to know if the deceased had received the covid jab, how old were they, and how severe were their other pre-existing conditions. What kind of treatments are provided for those diagnosed with covid? As for those ‘new cases’, we also need to know a whole lot more. How sick are they, do they even have any symptoms, how many of them had already received the covid jab.
Failing to provide that information does not inspire trust or cooperation.

The 11th person happens to be a relative of a friend. This person received the 3rd booster shortly before he died. He/She also tested positive for Covid three days before death. Instead of everyone yelling at each other, can we please agree to all yell at the Chief Medical Officer(s) and the Liberals? They are the ones who are not transparent and who are inforcing rules upon a society that has, after all, for the most part complied with the 'scientific mandates'.

Why don't they check your blood for antibodies prior to the shot, because natural immunity is better. (PFIZER scientists admit this).
Why don't they have natural immunity passports too, if immunity was the point?
Why have they admitted that restrictions for the "organic" individuals are only in place to coerce them, not for health and safety?
Why are you still allowed to work and travel, but can still get sick and infect others, if you get the shot?
These are serious questions anyone who believes this is all necessary really need to ask themselves.

I've started to turn into one of those people who always comments on the whitehorse star articles. I kinda have a foot in both camps really. Took my jabs, but I come down solidly on the side of folks who are being targeted by these mandates. All these mandates will do is divide people and cause hatred, they won't increase vaccination rates at all, just pit folks against each other. Pretty saddening really. Probably at some point, politicians will realise that this was an example of one of the worst moves a politician could ever have made, but most will continue to vote for Sandy unfortunately. But, ya know....somebody died....shouldn't be using that as part of an argument against mandates. That person probably has a family, and if they read people saying that their death was being used as part of a political game, it wouldn't give them comfort.

I don't agree with any aggressiveness towards these businesses, but it's hard to believe there won't be some restaurants going under with an immediate 15%+ margin cut. If restaurants banded together and said "no" would Sandy dare to force closures in a small community and risk the uproar? I doubt it. Vaccinated patrons are going to be spreading virus amongst each other anyways, and these establishments will still be getting exposure notices.

Keep asking for what you know you can’t get (ie specific details on age and health of covid deaths). There is no jurisdiction in North America releasing that info. Currie, not the child named Jonas would release that info. Get over it. Welcome to reality.
Welcome to medical info is confidential. You same people would be pulling your hair out if the smallest detail of your health info was released to the public.
Vaccines offer a level of immunity that is not perfect but is protective. This has been a fact since the dawn of vaccines. Life isn’t black or white and few things are 100% perfect (seatbelts don’t save every life)
Nobody is sorry you can’t go to a restaurant except for take out. Veterans are rolling in their graves when they hear you cry tyranny cause you can only get a Big Mac and Diet Coke via the drive thru.
There are lots of countries without vaccine mandates. Go there. Good luck getting universal tax payer funded health care though!

I was asked for my proof.. presented.. then I was asked for ID to prove I am who I say I am. Then, my name and phone number recorded. Last year gov. presented an app that told you if you encountered people who had a covid etc. ALL assurances were given that yes, the gov. tracked where you went, who you saw, what you bought, how much you spent..BUT, they weren't interested in that stuff.. Trudeau used that app to find out who left the country and caught them accordingly.
To use VISA/Banks/cell phone records would require mega court orders. But, when you loaded the gov app you were surrendering all that information. That app is dead now. But, the government is still policing us, by turning waitresses/sales people/cashiers into their henchmen.
I don't understand why people are putting up with this. It's gone way too far.
It is not the business owners fault.. or that salesperson. The blame lies squarely in the lap of the Liberal party.

The Yukon skipped the line for vaccine distribution, receiving far more than their share and earlier than the provinces. Why? Well because the Yukon's healthcare system is not up to dealing with a pandemic. Example: A 53 bed hospital with 3 ICU beds for 30,000 people. Instead of shouting out a huge "thank you" to the rest of Canada, we have a very few but very loud (and rude) people making us look like ungrateful uneducated bumpkins.

I see we are back to normal, as promised.
I will translate this article:
We can not offer up any demonstrably justified reasoning for the new draconian measures so we will lay them out at the same time as we report a death as to play into your emotions instead of logic.
Of course people are going to be upset with the ones enforcing the rules. If they provide the personal contact of the bureaucrat that made these rules, and these people care to listen, then the frustrated can instead share their feeling with them. I do no not think that anyone should be bullied or treated rudely. A calm notification that you will never give another penny to the business should be suffice. Remember they are only following orders. I feel like I have heard that phase before somewhere in history.
Another note about this story is the high degree of blame put on the people that are upset by the new measures. Again this is misdirected. Remember who made these rules. Remember who said we would be back to normal. Of course people are upset about this, because they know that nobody every complied their way out of tyranny.
