While the Liberal caucus is divided on when the prime minister should call the election, the Yukon MP doesn't care.

According to the Globe and Mail today, Prime Minister Paul Martin admitted the Liberal caucus is divided over when to call an election.

'For me, it doesn't matter,' Bagnell said this morning from Ottawa.

'I think a vast majority of MPs want to reserve their opinions until it's closer to the time.'

The reason for the hesitation from some MPs is the recent sponsorship scandal out of which the Auditor General of Canada revealed the misuse of more than $250 million of taxpayers' money.

Prior to the scandal, all signs were pointing to a spring election call by Martin.

Bagnell noted the inquiries into the abuse of Canadians' tax dollars have already started.

By the time Martin would have called the election prior to the scandal, a lot of the information about the fiasco would be out in the public, so Bagnell doesn't think it matters when the election is called.

Bagnell has been acclaimed to run for the Liberals again.

As for the sponsorship scandal, he believes Yukoners should be unhappy with what has been revealed.

'It's obviously a very disturbing situation people should be upset,' Bagnell said last week.

He said the government, including himself, are unhappy with the scandal as well and have already taken steps to deal with the matter.

'Most of us don't want it to happen again,' Bagnell said. The MP added that one of the most upsetting things to him is the misappropriation of tax dollars.

He said last week those conducting the main public inquiry, which has begun, have been told to complete the probe as soon as possible.

'I just want the information out as quickly as possible.'

In defence of his party's government, Bagnell said Martin has done a number of things to deal with the scandal. They include starting the inquiries and a criminal investigation, cancelling the program and changing how certain things work in Ottawa to prevent such a scandal from happening again.

Plus, said Bagnell, there will be more action taken once the probe has wrapped up.

As for Yukoners, as of last week, the MP said he had received three e-mails and three phone calls from constituents about the sponsorship debacle.

Yukoners are concerned with a number of other issues, according to the MP.

Bagnell would not say about what the scandal could do to his chances at re-election.
