After being known as the Yukon Teachers’ Association for decades, the territory’s educators have changed their organization’s name.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the union has been renamed the Yukon Association of Education Professionals (YAEP), and it includes a new logo.

According to president Ted Hupé, the change is intended to better reflect the breadth of membership of the organization.

It not only includes teachers, but educational assistants, First Nations language instructors, teachers on call and other education professionals.

“We are pleased with our new name—it’s inclusive and better demonstrates the composition of our membership,” Hupé said in a statement.

“We want our education professionals to take pride in being part of the association as they now see themselves reflected in the name. The feedback we've heard has been positive; we are happy with our new logo and the line imagery to reflect the shape of the territory.”

While the name has changed, Hupé said the YAEP’s mission and services remain the same.

The organization represents educators, provides training resources, and advocates for education issues at all levels of government across the territory.

@ Dave

The cost of rebranding is covered by the membership.
Not EVERYTHING is a vast conspiracy theory.

I guess we should call gas station employees “ petroleum fuel distributors” and McDonald’s employees red seal chefs.
What’s the cost of this rebranding?

This is nothing but an attempted distraction from Ted Hupe and the union supporting all the anti-vaxx govt workers. All of your members should be ashamed by you campaigning to keep anti-vaxxers in the workplace with other teachers and children. Just because you are a union does not mean you have to oppose literally everything the govt does. These mandates are being pursued across the country and for good reason.

The change makes sense as the organization has been striving to represent other classifications of educators since my time on the executive 15 years ago. I see they are also looking to sell their office and build a more useful structure.

Glad this is somehow making the news, I guess covid has been eradicated?
