Education system is in bad shape: YP

The number of issues and concerns related to the Yukon’s education system have continued to pile up over the summer, the Yukon Party said Thursday.

By Whitehorse Star on August 19, 2022

The number of issues and concerns related to the Yukon’s education system have continued to pile up over the summer, the Yukon Party said Thursday.

The government, meanwhile, has countered that the opposition party is simplty trying to stoke fears and division.

“Unfortunately, there has been a lack of leadership from the minister of Education (Jeanie McLean), or any member of cabinet, for that matter, as these issues come to a head on the eve of back-to-school,” the party said in a statement.

Concerns about staffing vacancies have been raised publicly by Ted Hupé, the president of the Yukon Association of Educational Professionals, teachers, and from school councils and communities, the official Opposition added.

“The teacher shortage and a lack of planning by the Liberal government has led to a number of job vacancies in schools throughout the territory as the new school year begins and reports of principals left without support to recruit staff members,” the Yukon Party said.

“To fill the gaps, there are reports of patchwork solutions of staff being required to take on positions outside their specialty.

“It seems these concerns are unfortunately becoming a reality, and is another indication that this Liberal government has simply checked out.”

Though critical staffing shortages are a major issue across the North, the party added, “the lack of leadership and action from this Liberal government has been an ongoing concern in the Yukon.”

In a January letter to McLean, the educators’ association, Autism Yukon, LDAY Centre for Learning, and the Association of Yukon School Councils Boards and Committees “said no substantive action on Inclusive and Special Education had been taken in the last two years,” the YP noted.

“Due to poor planning and co-ordination, students in Dawson City will be starting their year a few days later. Upgrades to a portable at Robert Service School – first suggested by the Yukon Party in 2017 – will not completed for the school year to begin on time.”

In Whitehorse, the party added, “there are highly-visible major infrastructure projects at Elijah Smith Elementary, Hidden Valley Elementary School and École Selkirk Elementary that will not be complete when kids head back to class
on Monday.”

“We are hearing from those on the ground that the education system in the Yukon has never been in worse shape,” said Education critic Scott Kent.

“For a government that says they are making education a priority, it seems Yukon educators, students and parents are bearing the brunt of the Liberals’ failure to address these concerns over the summer.”

Cabinet communications staff issued a statement about the Yukon Party’s concerns on Thursday afternoon.

“Once again, we are seeing the Yukon Party promote fear and division. It’s great that the Yukon Party is interested in education issues in our territory now,” the statement said.

“It would have been better if they had an interest in fixing them during the 14 years they were in government.

“Across the country – not just in the North – jurisdictions are experiencing education staffing shortages,” the cabinet stated added.

“It is also not unusual for there to be some staff postings and vacancies at the beginning of each school year. We continue to work closely with the very dedicated and hardworking school administration staff to prepare all Yukon schools to welcome students for another school year.

“There is nothing more important than the success of our students.”

Dawson-area students have received an extended summer vacation due to sewer and water supply construction work at their school.

The 2022-23 year had been due to start yesterday.

However, “progress on multiple school construction projects has impacted the school’s ability to open safely and to allow school staff to be ready to receive students,” Marilyn Marquis-Forster, the area superintendent for the Department of Education, advised parents Wednesday.

As for most Yukon schools, Dawson’s school year will now begin Monday.

“We acknowledge learning has been interrupted for the last three school years, and it is important that students have a full school year,” Marquis-Forster added.

“In the coming days, we will be working closely with the school council, school administration and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in to determine the best approach to make up this learning time.

“Thank you for your patience as we navigate through this situation.”

Everywhere there where exists a public education system and where there is a powerful union with low accountability, the system is declining and in chaos. UK, Canada, Aus, US..., all systems badly failing the student. This is a recent phenomenon and a result of shifting power dynamic between union and employer. For instance, In US, teachers now facilitating gender reassignment and surgery, interfering where they clearly have no role.

Private schools deliver much better experiences and outcomes. Why? No union no government no scandals, just the basics of learning.

Word on the street has it that some so called "Yukon Party" members are looking to form up a support group. Would anyone with insider information be able to confirm this?

Hello jack on Aug 23, 2022 at 11:10 pm:

The teachers are accountable and work extremely hard for the relative pittance that they receive.

It is the students and their parents that need to be more responsible/accountable. Your kids should not be vandalizing, smoking, using cannabis, consuming alcohol, and/or engaging in gang violence at the school - Any school. Too many other kids are hurt and/or permanently scarred by the actions of other students and it is too often dismissed as, kids will be kids.

The Jack Hulland fiasco is the direct result of BAD parenting. Until there is an appropriate level and of accountability either demonstrated or meted out to the offending students and their parents - Nothing will change!

But then those in charge communicate such disregard for school safety - Think sex abuse scandal and McPhee. Think general chaos and lawlessness within schools because the current environment is hostile to the exercise of authority in a system that propounds ideas such as non-interference, emotional dysregulation, and refusing to participate because - “feelings”.

Your little monsters are running the asylum and it is because of bad or absentee parenting.

Reconciliation should not wreck this silly nation. There are mutual obligations in any reconciliatory process. Fix your kids by example - Everyone of you no matter who you are - Because it is not the colour of your skin that matters it is your manifestation of character that does. Don’t let identity politics allow you to act like an a**hole.

You have to be different to make a difference!

Time to reform the system and limit the power of the unions. Introduce real accountability for teachers. End the days where teaching is considered just a steady paycheck with a long summer vacation and gold plated pension and where one can hide for their entire working life.

The teacher shortage is a national issue in every province/territory. Recruiting in this climate is difficult and something like this would have occurred under any government (not to defend the Yukon libs). Housing of course plays a big issue as teachers interested in moving up here will have a hard time finding a place. As for the other problems noted by YP well as official opposition their job is to criticize the current gov and put pressure on them to address these gaps. I fail to understand how the YP look like fools when they are citing concerns from the YTA and other agencies. They may not be offering solutions but that's not the job of the opposition until an election is near.

I find it interesting all these arm chair quarterbacks thinking they know about teaching and the problems when they have never taught a day in their lives. I am sure they say the same thing about any profession even though they have not worked in that profession. I am sure if we new the work peoplechaser did we would say they are over paid for the work they do.

If we take peoplechaser comment of glorified babysitters like Crusty Clark did in BC. Babysitters get paid what $7 a child and there are about 27 kids a classroom and 848 instructional hours in a year. That means teachers/aka babysitters should get paid $160k a year. I think teachers would like to be paid for baby sitting instead of a teachers salary.

If you think the best teachers are in the private sector you are sadly mistaken. They best teachers I have seen in BC are in the inner city schools. Are there good teachers and bad teachers, yes just like there are good and bad trades people, doctors, nurses, lawyers, etc.

So before you blame teachers you need to educate yourself otherwise you just look like the fools the YP are. I suggest you spend 3 weeks with a teacher inside and outside the classroom to understand how much time you "THINK" they work and how much of their own money they spend on their classrooms.

The curriculum tends to be written by professors or pets of the government in power at the time who have never taught K to 12. Teachers are told this is what you teach so teach it. Teachers tend to work within the guidelines they have to but do their best to educate kids to use critical thinking, problem solving, etc. Very little input is given from teachers on writing the curriculum and i speak from experience.

There is a teacher shortage across the world because a lot of teachers took early retirement due to COVID and the chaos it created in the schools. On average almost 50% of those people going into teaching quit in the first 5 years. The reason are simple, but too complicated for some of you armchair quarterbacks to understand.

I find it interesting people say the Yukon had to build a separate french school as stated by the supreme court. That has never been done in BC, Alberta, etc. with public money. We have french immersion schools that's it. I never liked the french having their own school system in the Yukon, period!

I am not defending this government when it comes to the projects but supply chains are broken and will be for some years. Public works should build in lengthy lead times on supplies that will affect their construction schedules.

As to YP spreading fear that is all the Cons do in the Yukon. Is it the party or the leader, not sure? They don't provide solutions. I have yet t see an opposition party from any level of government or political stripe that can point out the an issue and then offer solutions anywhere in this country. Would that be a novel idea if they did. Working together for all people not just crying the blues till they are in power then the other one does the same thing. The only time they tend to work together somewhat is when there are minority governments.

Suppose we all know about the teachers McPhee let's work in the Yukon. Highest payed public teachers in Canada here, most uneducated students to show for it. Essential, yeah I'll home school my child thanks tho. Just as essential as doctors, what a joke. All teachers can quit, we can stop being lazy and teach our own children. Save some tax dollars. Save your comments for someone that cares.

Truly we need to do better. Students are not nearly as safe in the schools as they were years ago. Stuff like the vandalism at Elijah Smith isn’t isolated it’s happening at every school.

Handing over your child’s education to a unionized workforce is bad parenting. Just because it’s normal doesn’t make it right. The quality of the final product speaks for itself (but often not in full sentences).

Kids, if you want to learn about useful things like ethics, law, economics, analytics or coding… you’re on your own.

A few ideas to start: let’s get rid of the ministers who like to cover up sexual abuse of special needs children. Remove the spirit bear from the science texts and start teaching chemistry, physics and biology again (sexualizing children is not biology, btw). Can the critical race theory and bring back geography and history. Bring back cursive so children might develop some fine motor skills. The reintroduction of phonics, the multiplication table and long division would also raise the bar.
It’s just not sustainable to keep expanding Yukon “university” (no matter how many times I hear that name, it makes me simultaneously laugh/cry) and expanding Yukon Government to accommodate Yukon students no one else wants. But many will cling to the fairy tale (see what happens when they can’t do math?) It’s time to start turning out some graduates who are employable or teachable outside the Special Olympics ring the Yukon has become.

We have just come out of a two year global pandemic. The whole world was turned upside down and it was hell for teachers, students and parents. It's going to take a little while for things to get back on track. There are a ton of jobs and no one to fill them. Let's all chill out a little.
I hope they find the kids that did the vandalism and make them repaint every inch of that school. I also think every school should have cameras in the hallways and around the entire perimeter. It would solve so many problems and be a deterrent to break ins and vandals.

After a week or so, I bet you change your tune. Educators are an essential service, much like doctors and nurses. Where would you be without teachers? Don't bite the hand that taught you!

With the teacher shortage, who will fill Whistle Bend in 2023? This is not on teachers, EA's, or Principals, but they will inevitably take the blame for the shortcomings of the Department. The government had committed to more inclusive education supports, but little to no progress has been made. Inclusive education does not mean cutting EA and teaching positions. The government has a legal obligation to uphold the Education Act, cutting staff and limiting support is a direct violation.

Yeah no kidding. Public schools are a mess. Teachers don't care, students care less. Half of them can't read or do any basic math when they leave school. All funded by a propaganda machine. Yeah I said this a long time ago. This is what happens when government is involved. No care to do things correctly or efficiently when it's all free money to them.
Great idea...go hire more managers to micro manage should be greatly effective. Don't get me wrong, I like teachers mostly good people. They have ham stringed our teachers. They are now over payed over glorified babysitters, and they know it. Now most good ones have lost their passion for the job.

Are they able to compete adequatly to get the good jobs and live a decent life with the education they recieved in our schools? Too much attention is focused on the petty things rather than the quality of the product our education system is intended to produce.

The French school was built by the YP under order of the Supreme Court. YP did not want to have to build that school they wanted to do a different design integrated with FH. The court is the reason there is a French school there. Not political. The schools are in rough shape this year. Is it political? Yes. But it is the government in power’s fault. Plain and simple.

A lot of things could have been done differently to have teachers in place before school started. A huge number of teachers quit. Government knew it was coming and did nothing near enough to make sure positions were filled. Calling out the opposition for the government’s shortcomings is not fair.

They need to get working to fix this. Now there are schools vandalized the weekend before school starts, EAs filling in for real teachers, not enough EAs to fill in where needed, and not damn near enough subs. This is the government’s fault.
