Education minister silent on vital issues: YP

By Whitehorse Star on August 26, 2022

Education Minister Jeanie McLean and the education system in general face a number of issues heading into the 2022-2023 school year, the Yukon Party said Thursday.

“The early results show many of those are getting worse, with more quickly piling up,” the official Opposition said.

“Some students who arrived to begin the school year found they did not have a teacher and were sent home.

“Other students discovered an educational assistant at the head of the classroom, leaving vulnerable students without the supports they require,” the party added.

“Communication with the public has been an ongoing area needing improvement by the minister – and unfortunately, after 16 months, the minister continues to fall behind expectations.”

That “poor record,” the YP said, “has crept into some schools themselves, as technical issues have resulted in their phone systems not working to begin the year.

“This is problematic in the case of an emergency where a parent needs to reach their child in a timely manner.”

Education critic Scott Kent said it has been “a rocky start to the year for some students, as well as the minister.

“The minister has been noticeably absent for the better part of the summer instead of showing leadership and making sure these issues were resolved prior to the start of school.

“The minister should be communicating with the Yukon Association of Education Professionals as well as school communities, to outline how and when these issues will be addressed so students, teachers and parents can focus on the education of children.”

In a statement released this morning, cabinet communications staff called the official Opposition’s comments “the kind of uniformed, speculative and personal attack we see too often from the Yukon Party and that which results in many capable people opting to stay out of public life.

“This has been a busy summer with much work to prepare the new First Nation School Board and all Yukon schools for another school year,” the statement said.

“We are not aware of any students being sent home from school for lack of available staff.

“Although the Department of Education is still actively recruiting for some teaching positions, plans are in place for coverage in enrolling classrooms.”

The department is recruiting for approximately 20 enrolling teacher positions spread over 32 Yukon schools or alternative learning sites, the statement added.

“There are plans in place to ensure the classrooms that do not yet have a dedicated teacher can continue to support student learning.

“In some situations, these plans include using EAs to temporarily support students until teachers on call can be put in place. This is the case in Carmacks and Pelly, but is not a system-wide occurrence.”

As for the phones, the statement said, “The only issue we are aware of was at Golden Horn Elementary. The land line was down earlier this week, but the voicemail was still working. The land line is now fully functioning.

“The situation did not impact the safety of students, as school administration are equipped with work cell phones and voicemails are checked frequently.”

The department “continue to work closely alongside the very dedicated and hardworking school administration staff to support all Yukon students and their families,” the cabinet statement added.

“There is nothing more important than the success of our students.

“Again, it’s great that the Yukon Party is interested in education issues in our territory now. It would have been better if they had an interest in fixing them during the 14 years they were in government.”

@Lynx The HVS ‘scandal’ dates back to the Pasloski government. Ask Currie why they did nothing, he sat in cabinet back then. Try to keep your facts straight.

I appreciate Lynx, the ministerial assistant, covering for her inept employer. Thank you ma'am, you are a credit to your community...and an exemplar of the "Cantada's" potential.

@ LYNX - can you please cite a list of their accomplishments that precluded their need to answer to the taxpaying public? Thank you. And I mean actual accomplishments, not announcements.

Is Steven a minister? Not understanding the defensive position of this illegal government that hides behind its lackeys. So, enlighten us. Are you saying the way things work is our so called and alleged "elected leaders" sacrifice their staffers for their failures? Just trying to clarify what you are defending here.

Perhaps the Minister of Education - needs an education. Too much cousin hiring up here in the YTG ranks, that would not fly anywhere else in Canada. Why do you think these rejects keep coming here? Rookie cops, inexperienced nurses and step -up lackeys in the public service will not be tolerated much longer. Not on our dime!

@Lynx: I would like to see any Yukon minister hold his/her/its own in a bun fight, much less a real fight.

It was the forced vaccination....nobody stood up for the unvaxxed. Not one single elected politician from any party.

Well, we all know that many teachers were "kicked-out" when they refused to attest last fall. Some of those have left the Yukon, some will never work for the department again, others are left wondering why the Yukon teachers federation never supported them. Oh yes, and teachers did not wish to continue to be treated like an untouchable.

@ Steven

Well, aren't we condescending.

Evidently you missed the course on ministerial accountability. Ministers are directly accountable - not someone else speaking on "their behalf". What we see now is evading, ducking, hiding, obfuscating, dithering and just plain disrespect. The only reason there are comms types is to ensure that government staff are muzzled and to try and to confuse the message with drivel aimed at the masses. They are not elected and have no ownership in messaging for anyone. They are not held accountable for the garbage they espouse in the same manner as ministers.

Frankly, we all would be better served if they just slid into oblivion so that citizens can hear from the horses mouth directly - not the horses rear-end.

Deviancy Steven, that’s what we’re dealing with here, deviancy on Aug 27, 2022 at 10:55 pm

WTF Steven on Aug 27, 2022 at 7:28 am:

Seriously! WTF Steven? EVERYONE knows, except you apparently, that the way to avoid liability for an issue is to have others further down the line of authority speak for you. If things go nuclear the Politico takes a side-step, that’s not what I said - FFS, you’re hilariously naive or an unabashed apologist supporting death cult Liberalism.

It’s common knowledge that YG senior management take a series of courses starting with Scapegoating 101, Obscuring the Facts 102, and how to Sow Hate in the Yukon Territory (SHYT 103). This introductory suite of courses prepares the learner for advance courses in, for example, Leading Through Psychopathology 666, and How to Live With Stupid Decisions 2071.

The Minister is in Halifax. Not being in the territory for the return of school is negligent.

Of course this is the same government that was negligent by not informing us parents about abuse at our elementary school.

@Karl
Yes Karl, the current government administration has been absent for much of the summer. I suspect they are hiding as they do not wish to encounter we citizens who might ask questions about their performance as a government. So they download their responsibility to inform the public to the Cabinet support staff to deflect and make petty excuses all the while casting aspersions at the opposition for doing their jobs as critics of the government and their poor decisions.
I am wondering which of the elected members approve what the Cabinet communications folks say to the media, somebody has to be responsible doncha think?

For all you people crying about how cabinet communications fields all the responses (on this article and others), it's clear you have absolutely no clue how things work. I'm sure you are also the type of people that, when given a perfectly reasonable answer that you don't like from a staff member at a store, you stamp your feet and demand to speak to the manager (even though that manager says the exact same thing as the staff member).

Has it ever occurred to you that the retail staff member, or the communications folks in government are telling you something that may have been told to them by the manager/Minister? Do you think communication just makes things up on their own? No. The Minister and support staff work together to provide an answer.

Just because you don't see it coming out of the Minister's mouth, doesn't mean that the words aren't theirs.

Why should government Ministers waste their time responding to every Yukon Party press release? It's better for them to deal with the real issues facing the territory rather than just getting into bun fights with the career politicians of the Yukon Party. Plenty of time to do that when kindergarten, sorry legislature is back in session.

These... are honest quotes from our government officials? Wow, one takes a swing, the other dodges and swings right back. More childish then the children your supposed to be looking out for. This whole thing just makes you shake your head, reads like satire.

Thanks again Onion News Network.

Do we have an absentee government here? Was does Cabinet communications field every response to any issue rather than any of the elected Ministers?
