A 34-year-old Whitehorse man is dead following a single-vehicle rollover along the Alaska Highway Tuesday night, RCMP Cpl. Natasha Dunmall said today.

Dunmall said the driver, whose name has not yet been released, was not wearing his seat belt.

He was ejected from the southbound vehicle when it left the highway approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Whitehorse.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the corporal said.

Dunmall said the lone passenger, a 30-year-old Whitehorse woman, is in stable but serious condition.

Road conditions were not a factor.

The investigation indicates the 2004 Dodge SRT-4 was travelling in excess of 130 kilometres per hour at the time. It came to rest just over 100 metres off the highway.

Dunmall said a passing motorist, who was probably alerted by the debris thrown from the vehicle, called 911.

The woman was outside the vehicle sitting on the side of the road with a passerby when the RCMP arrived, she said.

Names will not be released until the man’s next of kin have been notified.

This was my brother. Yes he drove like a idiot. However I am not totally believing he was even the driver. The woman climbed out of the drivers window? Look at the pictures? Why would she have to do that? I'm confused I've had no closure and they had 5 kids together of which reside with our mother due to issues they had. I just want the truth. She also claims my brother yelled to her to get out of the car. How if he died on impact like the officers have told me could he have done that. I really want this accident fully investigated. I loved my brother and just wanted to see him and his gf change and get better: now this.

Groucho: You're assuming that the beer can is his. Maybe let toxicology come back before making a final decision.

The car came to rest ONE HUNDRED METRES off the road?!! Good grief. While I am sure people mourn his loss, having been witness to his ridiculous and dangerous driving within city limits this really is not a surprise. Hopefully his passenger will be ok.
