Whitehorse RCMP are investigating a hit-and-run which occurred Monday afternoon on Second Avenue.

At about 3:30 p.m., police received a call reporting a beige Ford Excursion had collided with another vehicle in a parking lot on Alexander Street.

Ten minutes after leaving the first collision, the driver turned down Second Avenue and collided with a school bus before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

"The downtown quarters are big enough for people to disappear, especially with delays in phone times,” Sgt. Tom Wyers said today.

"But the incident is under investigation. We have several witnesses and have identified and are pursuing a suspect.”

Though some children were aboard the school bus, no injuries were reported.

A second bus was brought in quickly to take the children home, as parents were contacted to notify them of the accident.

Police are urging the suspect to come forward.

"They should know that we have a good idea who it is, and they may want to take a proactive approach and contact the RCMP themselves,” Wyers said.

As a parent of one of the children on the bus I want to say the only notification I received was a call from my daughter, in grade 3, to say there had been an accident. Both of my children, my son is grade 7, reported the accident to me but the bus company, the Dept of Education of the school have told me. This is the most information I have received about the incident.

Isn't there a process in place to notify parents officially when something like this happens?
