Driver facing several charges after collision

A 24-year-old man is facing several charges

By Rhiannon Russell on November 10, 2014

A 24-year-old man is facing several charges after the pickup truck he was driving careened over a couple of curbs Sunday and struck the Department of Education sign on Lewes Boulevard.

The Dodge Ram truck was travelling into the downtown area from Riverdale at about 9 a.m. when the driver lost control at Hospital Road. The vehicle came to a stop in a nearby parking lot, with its front end smashed up.

Whitehorse RCMP attended the scene and arrested the driver, whose name wasn’t released.

He was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing a police officer, drug possession, and the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He was also charged under the Motor Vehicles Act with operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, exceeding the posted speed limit and driving carelessly.

The driver was also issued a 24-hour roadside suspension.

The matter is now before the territorial courts.

"Well, before everyone lynches the fellow, keep in mind that this section of road often gets covered with black ice and is the scene of an accident every year..."

Did you miss part(s) of the article...?
"He was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing a police officer, drug possession, and the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle..." ..."also charged under the Motor Vehicles Act with operating a vehicle without a driver’s license (not licence), operating an uninsured motor vehicle, exceeding the posted speed limit and driving carelessly...."

What does it matter the section of road.? No license (at 24..!), in possession of drugs, weapon and is illegally/carelessly operating a motor vehicle (all before 10 am..!)... but before we lynch him eh.? c'mon...

Well, before everyone lynches the fellow, keep in mind that this section of road often gets covered with black ice and is the scene of an accident every year. Really easy to lose control at that same spot. And, the easiest thing is the world is to get into more trouble when you are already in trouble....without a licence, money for insurance, etc.

Why on earth would they not release the individual's name?
Courts are a joke of punishment, perhaps public shaming would have a greater impact.

Northerner12 - Absolutely agree with you. 24 hours seems to be a moot point though. One would think if the person drove at all it would be a criminal offense. Then again this person will probably walk away scott free - and be given funding to purchase a new vehicle!

To "wolfe" and "Kim Tucker", if the police give an unlicenced driver a 24 hour suspension and that driver drives again during that time, it becomes a criminal offence, as opposed to just another charge (fine) under the Motor Vehicles Act. I would think that it would be preferable to get this fool on additional criminal charges, don't you?

"The driver was also issued a 24-hour roadside suspension. "
In the paragraph prior to my quote it says " He was also charged under the Motor Vehicles Act with operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence,"
So what was the 24 hour suspension for ? What did they suspend?

Quick thought....you have no license how in the world do they suspend it for 24 hrs. How about some kind of can't have a license for X amount of time and mandatory lessons on road safety?
