A 35-year-old Whitehorse woman is facing charges of impaired driving among others after a vehicle knocked down a street light, then a power pole 60 metres away last Friday.

Berdina Hager has also been charged with operating a vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public, driving while disqualified, consuming alcohol within 48 hours of reporting to the Whitehorse Correctional Centre and failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Hager was arrested later Friday and remains in custody. She was in court Monday to face the charges and is scheduled to appear again Thursday for a bail hearing.

Power to a portion of the McIntyre subdivision was lost following the collision at approximately 1:15 p.m.

ATCO Electric Yukon was forced to turn off the entire subdivision for more than two hours to make repairs.

Some homes were without electricity for just over four hours.

That the street light and power pole were located in a residential neighbourhood is concern enough, Whitehorse RCMP Const. Julia Fox said Monday.

“It was close to a daycare, so that is also very concerning.”

Section 718.2(e) of Canada's criminal code, will give her as many opportunities she wishes to be a drunk in traffic putting others at risk killing and/or maiming as many as she desires.

Why do you think the dysfunction is so sooooooo rife up here?

This woman used to live next door to me and all I can say is that this doesn't surprise me in the least. She has a serious problem with alcohol. I just hope that none of her kids were in the car and that those kids are being looked after now.

Well let's slap her hands and let her get back on the road to continue her bad driving practices.

We all know that's what is going to happen anyways.

Sounds like Ms. Hager needs to spend a long, long time in a secure facility where she's removed from alcohol and society.
