Developer Tip Mah has announced the resurrection of a proposed condominium tower for the corner of Strickland Street and Second Avenue.

The building will proceed “subject to achieving suitable pre-sales,” he said in a statement last Thursday.

Units will begin at a price of $370,700, says a sign erected at the site on Tuesday afternoon.

“This project originally came to market back in the spring of 2018,” said a statement outlining Mah’s plans.

“It was believed then that this type of high-quality building, constructed of concrete and steel, would fill a need in the Whitehorse housing market as it then existed

“Unfortunately, the market for this type of product was proven not to be sufficient at that time, so Mr. Mah and his financial partners decided to take the project off the market in June of 2018.”

The site, now used for parking, was formerly occupied by a building used by the Whitehorse branch of the Royal Canadian Legion before it became a fitness centre and was destroyed by fire.

The historic Krautschneider House also stood` on the corner until it was moved to a storage area.

“We believe the market is now ready for a condominium building constructed to the highest standard using concrete and steel in a location in the central hub of Whitehorse,” said Mah.

The building would be constructed by local contractor Ketza Construction, using local sub trades for all its principal components.

“Many millions of dollars will be spent on this project, resulting in a major boost to our local economy,” said Peter Densmore, the president of Ketza.

“Ketza is proud to have been chosen to be the contractor for what will be a very unique and special building.”

Sales team members Marilyn Mah and Graham Frey of Coldwell Banker will work out of a display suite which is now open adjacent to the building site on Strickland Street.

The first Mah’s Point condo development was constructed across Second Avenue from the site, at the corner of Jarvis Street, after the former Pioneer Inn, Foxy’s and Bench and Gavel complex was demolished in 2009.

Good for you Tippy for keeping it local. Alberta, I mean Northern Vision sure seems to be using lots of Alberta contractors, like Johnson Builders.
