Four Surrey, B.C. men and one Whitehorse man are facing assault charges stemming from the violence at last month's Dust Ball slo-pitch tournament dance, Whitehorse RCMP Sgt. Ross Milward said Thursday.

At around 2:15 a.m. July 16, police were alerted to a fight at the dance, which took place at the Takhini Arena. Officers found two people who had been assaulted.

As the investigation into the violence continued over the past couple weeks, RCMP say, it was learned there were, in fact, four separate assaults involving the same people, though individual involvement for each person was varied.

'These were all really separate incidents,' said Milward.

It took a couple of weeks to lay the charges because police had to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Michael Davis Brereton, 22, of Whitehorse, as well as 21-year-old Surrey resident Clinton Robert Derkson are each charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Kevin Gordon Smith, 21, of Surrey, is charged with assault, aggravated assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

Finally, Jesse Allan Ritchie and Calvin Jefferson Hayes, both 27 and from Surrey, are each facing a charge of aggravated assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm.

Derkson's next court appearance was scheduled for this afternoon.

Crime Stoppers Yukon has issued descriptions and is looking for information on the other four.

Smith is described as Caucasian with brown eyes and short, cropped brown hair. He has a lean build at six feet in height and weighs about 170 lbs. He also goes by the nickname Connor.

Ritchie is also Caucasian with hazel eyes, short black hair and a goatee. With a stocky build, Ritchie is five feet, eight inches tall and weighs around 264 lbs.

Milward said police don't yet have a height and weight description on Hayes, but he is described as a black male with a heavy build. Hayes has brown eyes and black hair and goes by the nickname of Tyson.

Brereton, who is also known as Nick, is Caucasian with a medium build at five feet, six inches tall and weighing 169 lbs. He has blue eyes with short, cropped blond hair.

'Police caution the public not to approach or interfere with these individuals, but to contact police immediately,' the Crime Stoppers bulletin reads.

Anyone with information on the individuals can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

In a separate incident prior to the 2:15 a.m. matter, RCMP arrested two other Surrey residents at around 1:20 a.m. at the same dance.

Both Kelly Auclair, 28, and Jeffrey Paul Redick, 25, are charged with assault causing bodily harm.

RCMP say alcohol was a factor in all five incidents.

'Police would like to thank the numerous individuals who came forward with valuable information in relation to these incidents,' said the RCMP.

'Police also encourage individuals with additional information to come forward and speak to police.'
