Donations continue to flow to Salvation ArmyThe local branch of the Salvation Army is reporting a strong outcome to its Christmas fundraising efforts.
Capt. Robert Sessford told the Star the kettle campaign had raised $48,000 as of today, following the work of dedicated volunteers who collected donations at storefronts across the city.
'That represents a portion of the funds we count on each Christmas,' he said.
This season's fundraising goal is $150,000, he said.
Sessford said the Salvation Army largely relies upon mail-in donations from residents. He said he was unsure exactly how much had been received so far but that staff still had about $15,000 to reach their goal.
'But we know it's normal for people to wait until Dec. 24 to mail out their cheques,' he said. 'Which is good, because we receive it in the new year, and we can use it to help pay some of the bills from December.'
He said he understands that for most people, 'the cheque is in the mail, so to speak.
'We count on people mailing in their donations.'
