Don’t touch the clocks, Yukoners reminded

Yukoners no longer have to change their clocks twice a year, their government reminded them Thursday.

Yukoners no longer have to change their clocks twice a year, their government reminded them Thursday.

Starting Nov. 1, Yukon Standard Time will be permanently seven hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC -7).

As originally announced earlier this year, the time we are on today will be the correct time going forward – there will be no “falling back” in November.

That means this winter, the territory will be on the same time as Edmonton and Yellowknife, but one hour ahead of Victoria and Vancouver.

The decision to remain on permanent time was informed by the results of a public engagement conducted earlier this year.

The survey drew more than 4,800 responses from Yukon people and organizations, with most in favour of ending the seasonal time change.

A What We Heard report released last March showed that 93 per cent of Yukoners who participated wanted seasonal time changes banished. Of those, 70 per cent were in favour of permanent Pacific Daylight Saving Time.

“We heard what Yukoners had to say and we have listened,” said Premier Sandy Silver.

“Seasonal time changes are an outdated convention in our modern and connected world.

“I am very proud of our government’s leadership on this issue and I look forward to other jurisdictions in Pacific North America joining us in this time zone.”

Internet-connected devices should automatically update.

“If you have concerns or questions about your device, contact your service provider,” the government advised.

@At home in the Yukon: The time zone change will actually give MORE light in the afternoon when your children are heading home from school. The change means that solar noon (i.e. the brightest part of the day when the sun is highest in the sky) will be at about 2 pm in Whitehorse, year-round.

Is this not kind of a screw-up at this point? I can't say I followed it closely, but as I recall BC and the Yukon were going to be synchronized. Now we're out of step with more provinces and states. The first I heard that BC wasn't changing was with this reminder. This is just inexplicable, unless the Liberals wanted some fatuous issue to point to as an example that they "listened to the people."

This is just stupid. Suck it up Sandy and adimt you are making a huge mistake.
At the very least, wait until other territorial jurisdictions are on-board.
Two hour time difference with Alaska in the winter! Fluctuating time synchronization with BC and Alberta - it wont be pretty!

Excellent. I wish all of Canada would follow this lead.

In summer, who cares what time it is. In winter, with daylight saving time, most of our kids will arrive home from school in the pitch black. We'd do much better if we lived on standard time rather than DST all year round. At least we should follow the lead of our much larger neighbour to the south. It gets awkward explaining the idiosyncrasies of the Yukon to outsiders.

Ugh, can't wait to see what a mess this causes with computer systems, etc., as I'm sure no one else in the world cares about Yukon Standard Time.

If it only takes 5000 people to change things around here I'll have 5000 signatures by next week demanding the liberals resign! This will only last 1 year.. can't see too many people excited about it being light at 10am...

What an idiocy. The premier of BC came here and sold the idea to the fools; then BC stayed as it was. Sad that SandyS felt for it.
