Don’t become COVID-complacent, Hanley warns

The COVID-19 situation in the territory remains steady with no active cases – to date, the Yukon has seen 15 cases of the virus.

By John Tonin on September 24, 2020

The COVID-19 situation in the territory remains steady with no active cases – to date, the Yukon has seen 15 cases of the virus.

However, given recent projection models, Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer said Wednesday, it’s not a time to rest on our laurels. Instead, he urged Yukoners to remain vigilant.

Hanley and Premier Sandy Silver addressed media at their weekly COVID-19 press conference.

“Modelling information figures released (Tuesday) by Canada’s chief public health officer Theresa Tam show the epidemic is accelerating rapidly,” said Hanley.

“Dr. Tam warned that if Canadians don’t continue to practise public health measures, the virus can be expected to surge faster and stronger than the first wave.

“Projections indicate that cases could climb to more than 5,000 per day. Short-term projections show there could be over 150,000 cases by early October and 9,000 additional deaths.”

Hanley stressed that the only protection against COVID-19 is in how we behave.

“In Yukon, we have only had to manage COVID cases occasionally but we are continually managing COVID risk,” he said.

“The risk of one COVID incursion that turns into an outbreak, it can be life-threatening to some, or stretch our health care or our public health capacity.

“Managing COVID risk means being vigilant while maintaining that balance. It means reasonable preventative measures in place that make sense for us without community transmissions but without having to go through the restrictions other areas have faced and are now facing again.”

Hanley and Silver said it’s important that Yukoners continue to practise the safe six. Silver added the biggest COVID threat is outside the territory.

“We currently have no active cases of COVID in the Yukon,” said the premier.

“That means the biggest threat is the importation of the virus from another jurisdiction where there are active cases.”

As influenza season approaches, Hanley said, it’s important that everyone gets their flu shot this year.

“This year, I think we can all agree that it is even more important than usual,” said Hanley.

“Since we can’t tell the difference between COVID and the flu by symptoms alone, what we want to prevent is people getting sick from either.”

This year, Hanley said, flu shots will be administered on a drop-in basis at the Yukon Convention Centre, with no appointment required.

“We are doing it this way to maximize the number of people getting the flu shot, to keep them safe while getting a shot, and cleaning between patients easier and faster,” he said.

Pharmacists in Whitehorse will also be able to administer the flu shots in their businesses. They will be announcing their own details.

In rural communities, people can receive the flu shot at the health centres.

The vaccine will be available on Oct. 19 for high-risk citizens and a week later, Oct. 26 for the general public.

Hanley also announced that the Yukon’s COVID-19 Testing Centre (CTC) – renamed from the Respiratory Assessment Centre (REC) – will extend its hours. It will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“The increased hours of the CTC is part of the efforts to increase our testing capacity as well as in anticipation of possible increased demand during the influenza season,” said Hanley.

Silver, fresh off a trip to several communities, said the Yukon is fortunate to be in the position it’s in, and thanked the teams of border officials in the communities for their dedicated work.

“We have had more than 48,000 travellers enter the territory over the past few months, including more than 18,000 non-residents transiting through our territory,” said Silver.

“Even with all of these travellers, we have not seen any cases related to people travelling through the territory.”

Silver also announced there have been three new charges under the Civil Emergency Measures Act (CEMA).

Two are for hosting an indoor gathering surpassing 10 people, and one involves a failure to self-isolate for 14 days. The government does not identify the accused parties.

It has received 832 complaints since the pandemic began:

• failure to self-isolate: 466;

• social gatherings over 10 inside or 50 outside: 23;

• failure to transit through the Yukon in 24 hours or stay on the designated route: 321;

• businesses failing to comply with orders: nine; and

• failure to abide by a declaration form or not permitted entry into the Yukon: 12.

There have been a total of 11 people charged, and 15 charges laid under the CEMA.

832 complaints. I understand. With Hanley's covid, you really can't have a life. Got nothing better to do, but, tattle tale, eat, drink, drug binge, maybe slap the wife (husband) around. That is true for many. Many others are strained to the overdose point of rather go that way than let covid get me.

But then, there are those rays of sunshine. Just today, I watched a young Mom cuddling her little boy in the park while I was at the stop sign. I wanted everyone back to work. But i am seeing lots of rays.. and I am rethinking that. Maybe let husbands income split again so Mom's can stay home and raise their children, take care of their families if they want to. Maybe some creative minds can find a way to make it work, without a guaranteed basic income program.

Dr. Hanley keeps his cards to close to his chest. He should let us know whether or not he is considering placing BC in the same category as the rest of the provinces. While they were the model province earlier on in the pandemic they are now getting getting a lot of cases. Part of it is, I think, is that they don't require any isolation for inter provincial travel.
That means that if you were in Alberta, you could drive to BC then fly up here and tell the officials you had been working in BC for the summer and get a free pass to the Yukon without self isolating.

Things change in a heart beat. We now have someone in the Whitehorse Hospital (a non resident) who is ill from COVID-19.
This Yukon Territory seems to be wide open for visitors - is it a surprise this is happening?????

Covid is coming here with the second wave and relaxed travel.
The new Yukon model shows we will have a few deaths. We do have to keep it out of care facilities.

@My Opinion
To help add some relevant context, consider that the life expectancy in BC is 81 yrs at birth and 20 yrs at age 65.

Yes, it's mostly the elderly and yes, most had underlying conditions. But the question is, would those people have lived if they didn't catch COVID-19. We don't know. Are we, as a society, willing to risk people's lives in exchange for normalcy? I don't have an answer.

Don't forget that COVID-19 appears to be a lingering disease in many people. Permanent organ damage, long-term health issues. People are reporting fatigue and weakness weeks and months after recovering from the acute stage of infection. Even if you don't die, you could suffer from short-term or long-term disability.

One has to consider that when our only hospital is under restriction due to a flare up in infection, a lot of other people suffer and yes, die for not being able to get the treatment, procedure and or surgeries that can save their lives. They don't have covid, did everything right. Lost my aunt that way in March. No blood transfusion for you lady they said. We'll make you comfortable they said.

B.C. has been lauded for haveing the site with the best COVID statistics.

As of a few weeks ago that Site showed the average age of a COVID death in BC was 85 years. Oldest being 103 youngest 47.

To maintain an average of 85 with even one 47 year old means that almost all were older.

I would like to see the statistics on those that died as well and see how many had Immune disorders or compromised immunity due to Cancer drugs, Arthritis drugs, HIV Aids, and a whole host of Immune challenges.

There is also the statistical error of including those who died "with" COVID as apposed to those that died "of" COVID. There is more at play here then meets the eye.

@North_of_60 so the only thing that matters is deaths... thats a ridiculous way to look at it because it only includes deaths to date, not deaths if the entire population got infected. The Yukon would be in a very bad situation if we did end up with spread here, large older population, large first nation population, poor health care in communities etc, but you keep rocking the tin hat!

During the last Covid update neither one of these gentlemen mentioned the use or lack thereof concerning masks. Strange that because most health experts are saying that mask use is the best defense until a vaccine is found and applied.

Hello Dave - Lets be honest here... If you round up it is .0006. Let them appear to be more honest than they are... In the long run allowing them to save face now will help mitigate their shame later.

That’d be Super Dave... Thanks Dave!

@Ramen dude isn't using their noodle. Their faulty logic is like claiming increased shark attacks in the summer are caused by people eating ice cream at the beach.
Using Rd's faulty logic shows the Yukon Covid restrictions have also stopped unicorn attacks.

@David Griffiths: So you’re saying that the .0005 of the population death rate in the USA which is what those 200,000 works out to is worth all the chicken little action we’re experiencing? How many did cancer or other diseases take during that same time?

@Max Mack

The reason we have, as you stated:

No (active/confirmed) COVID cases in the Yukon.
No COVID hospitalizations.
No COVID deaths.

is because of the restrictions we've placed, is it that difficult to grasp?

Models are not science, and they are not scientific evidence. The dire forecasts of the modelers have failed to materialize and their estimates are out by a factor of 10-100x. A model is not reality.

There is a host of problems with Canada's "COVID-19 model", but our journalists don't seem too interested in fact-checking any of that. But, they'd be all over it in a second if it came out of Trump's mouth - which demonstrates to me the huge bias of our so-called fourth estate.
No COVID cases in the Yukon. No COVID hospitalizations. No COVID deaths.

Time to end the fear-mongering and end the "emergency".

Again 9200 deaths is NOT a "pandemic". Add a few more zeros on there and then you'll have my attention. They've tested 5 +MILLION people, with only 125K sick and a mere 9K dead.. 80+% were old with OTHER diseases and a weak immune system..

Just wait till they come door to door. Testing you. It's what the UN and WHO has called for already. When you have a temp, or your kid does, they WILL take them away. Please know your enemy and their plans!

Some people continue to spread misinformed fear porn:
Yukoner states: " BC which is very rapidly turning into one of the worst places in Canada for per capita rates. "
However the actual percapita Covid deaths per million population tell a much different story.
25\09\20 Deaths/M
Canada TOTAL.... 264
★ Quebec............ 712
★ Ontario............. 215
★ Nova Scotia..... 70
★ Alberta............. 64
★ British Columbia 49
★ Saskatchewan.. 22
★ Manitoba......... 15
★ Newfoundland and Labrador 6
★ New Brunswick 3
★ Prince Edward Island 0
★ Yukon 0
★ Northwest Territories 0
★ Nunavut 0

Dr. stop putting fear in the citizens. Covid19 is not a death sentence. When it gets bad, then say something. In the meantime, leave us alone.

Maybe Hanley shouldn't be complacent and increase protocols for people entering the territory from BC which is very rapidly turning into one of the worst places in Canada for per capita rates. Maybe a required test on entry... setup a booth at the airport. Don't have to quarantine but then at least you will know the source of any cases instead of trying to figure it out down the line.
