Dixon launches vigorous attack on Liberals

Currie Dixon wants to be back in the legislature.

By Tim Giilck on April 23, 2021

Currie Dixon wants to be back in the legislature.

Right now.

Following the swearings-in of his Yukon Party MLAs on Thursday, Dixon launched what he likely thought was a blistering attack on Premier Sandy Silver for failing to move faster to get the government back in session.

“Six weeks ago, Sandy Silver and the Liberals decided to call a snap election,” Dixon said from the foyer of the legislature during an in-person-only news conference held at noon.

“They did this less than two weeks after extending the state of emergency in Yukon for yet another 90 days.

“They did so after weeks of denying that they would … while assuring Yukoners that they were only focused on the vaccination rollout.

“They did so despite the fact that even though they had a majority in the legislature... and despite the fact they had not even passed their budget.”

For a governing party to not even attempt to pass its budget before an election was “unheard of,” Dixon said.

“Sandy Silver gambled that an unnecessary snap election would be in the best interests of the Liberals. Well, he was clearly wrong, and his plan backfired.”

Dixon noted the Liberals lost seats to both the Yukon Party and the NDP – and were a distant second to the Yukon Party in popular support (39.3 per cent to 32.3 per cent).

“They lost the popular vote… by a lot. Less than a third of Yukoners voted for them, and they lost a senior cabinet minister (Pauline Frost),” said Dixon.

“As a result of all this, the territory has been left without leadership for over a month and a half. The territorial government does not have a budget. Key decisions have been left in limbo.

“Businesses are asking when contracts will be awarded. Employees in the public service are looking for direction.

“Even the chief medical officer has indicated that he has new recommendations but the government is in caretaker mode so they cannot be implemented.”

Since the April 12 election, Dixon said, Silver has been nearly invisible.

“He’s been missing in action; silent; absent.

“What became a hallmark for the last Liberal government was their inability to make decisions and to take action. And we are seeing that play out once again as a vacuum of leadership has taken over as the Liberals have gone to ground.”

Dixon said the Yukon Party has not had any communication with Silver – despite his saying in a media release he would be speaking with both the Yukon Party and the NDP.

On election night in Dawson City, Silver vowed all the parties would work together.

“It took the premier a week to issue a meek statement that said he would form the government and intended to speak to the other party leaders,” Dixon said. “Since the election, the Yukon Party has not heard a word from Sandy Silver.

“It surprises me; it certainly does,” Dixon added. “It looks as if the Liberals are interested in only working with the NDP.

“I’d be happy to hear from the Liberals what their plans are. I think there is certainly a possibility to work together, but that starts with conversations.

“But if they’re going to start with the budget they introduced a few weeks ago, then no, we wouldn’t be willing to support that. We don’t have confidence with the premier on that front. But we’re willing to work with anyone to get a government formed.”

Interestingly, Dixon said he had spoken with NDP Leader Kate White several times.

He wouldn’t reveal what has been discussed, nor whether he would be willing to work with the NDP to form a government if offered the opportunity.

With both the Liberals and the Yukon Party having eight seats, it’s possible either of them could be called govern if circumstances allow – though the incumbents normally receive the first summons.

However, Dixon went on to say he would not accept any co-operation between the Liberals and NDP.

“By not even reaching out to the Yukon Party, it is clear to me that his (Silver’s) preference is to form a left-wing coalition with the NDP. Based on the results of the election, that is entirely possible and legitimate.

“If that is the path they want to go down, then fine; but we cannot support such a coalition.”

Dixon said his message to the Liberals is a simple one: restart the legislative process as soon as possible – even by the end of the month.

“It’s time to get to get to work.”

Dixon noted the interim spending authority for the government is coming to an end. There are government contracts that need to be awarded for work this summer to begin.

“The Yukon needs a budget, it needs leadership and it needs some certainty,” he said.

The official Opposition said in a subsequent statement, “If the Liberals are unable to gain the confidence of the legislature, then the Yukon Party is ready to govern.

“Enough with the uncertainty. It is time to get to work.”

After the news conference, Dixon had a surprise waiting for him at his office: a missed call from Sandy Silver.

The premier released this statement today: “I have spoken with the commissioner about my intentions to form government and garner the confidence of the legislative assembly. That work is underway, and our Liberal MLAs will be sworn in as members of the legislative assembly today.

“The critical work of government is continuing and Yukoners have access to essential services and supports,” Silver added.

“Yukoners have asked us to collaborate, and that is what my team and I are committed to doing.

“We have met with the NDP and we continue to meet with them. While I have reached out to the leader of the Yukon Party, I have yet to hear back.”

@observer... true liberal math. I repeat, there are more YP supporters than Lib supporters. If you want to extrapolate and add the 40% who didn't vote (thank Sandy for the poorly timed election resulting in lowest turnout in decades), the YP would have an even wider margin. I'm not sure why you're adding numbers from people who voted NDP, totally liberal math. But gotta give you credit for trying.

Joe does not know, sorry but if this sites thumbs up and down were used in the election, the result would have been the cons running the table. That did not happen in fact they will not form government.
Just to put this in further perspective for you, if you are walking down the street, there are 9 people walking towards you, well 6 of those people do not share your vision for the Yukon. You are in the minority and an argument could be made that you are heading the way of the dinosaur.

@captain obviously ....there are more YP supporters in Yukon than there are lib supporters, that’s real and that’s why there are more YP clicks.

I think Mr. Currie is hearing all the Yukoners not working for government who do not get paid every second Wednesday. We have bills to pay and wish to return to our previous lives where we toil for an income to pay those bills.
Each day the Liberals demonstrate their priorities and for many of us - we are at the bottom of the list if we are on it at all.

Politics. A minority situation gets the political mud a flyin. The news people are gonna have a field day for the next 5 years....yes 5.....Kate can't pass up the opportunity.

Oh and don't worry, the show doesn't end or involve doom and gloom, every little thing is gonna be alright. It's just politics.

childish games on Apr 25, 2021 at 10:10 am

The same day as Currie's news conference, in fact apparently DURING Currie's news conference, Premier Silver contacted the Yukon Party for the FIRST TIME, then having touched that base made this manipulative statement:

“Yukoners have asked us to collaborate, and that is what my team and I are committed to doing.
“We have met with the NDP and we continue to meet with them. While I have reached out to the leader of the Yukon Party, I have yet to hear back.”

Currie says the truth is, Silver had NOT reached out to him whatsoever, until he was busy in front of the microphone during his news conference, the same day that Silver pretended he had 'reached out': "After the news conference, Dixon had a surprise waiting for him at his office: a missed call from Sandy Silver."

They don't call him 'Slippery Sandy' for nothing.

This is our premier effectively lying to the public. He had not contacted the Yukon Party other than to be able to technically say, 'I made a phone call', so he could make it seem that THEY were not interested in collaborating. According to Currie, the very first contact had happened while he was in front of the mike, and immediately before Silver said, "I have yet to hear back from the Yukon Party.' How do you work with a person like that? It looks like Silver is all games, doesn't mind a good dose of dishonesty, and is fostering bad will with the YP.

I predict another election within a year. Silver is playing this badly and is just as arrogant as Currie. Does he think the public is completely stupid? We need leaders who are inclusive and truly honest. Currie was no different from Silver when he was electrified with "Power". They can't handle it. I don't want Kate White and the NDP either. I wish Linda Benoit had have been elected as leader of the YP, but the culture of politics with the Liberals and YP is still aligned with arrogance, divisiveness, game playing and dishonesty. How a person handles power shows their maturity level and who they really are in terms of values.

This is the hyper-partisan, shoot from the hip, ego driven Currie Dixon I remember from the Pasloski days. A big mouth jumping to his own conclusions. Back then it was that a small minority of the usual whiners wanted to see significant protection for the Peel, and could easily be ignored.

Now he is flipping out because he thinks the Liberals are pulling a fast one by having negotiations with the NDP, and not him. Currie needs to get his arrogance in check. The Liberals may or may not be doing that, and if Silver really did only reach out for the first time while Currie was doing this announcement, and then Sandy Silver promptly said, "I haven't HEARD BACK from the Yukon Party yet", then yes, Sandy Silver is a disingenuous drip. (read intellectually dishonest, and won't take responsibility for the fact that HE had not yet talked to the YP in terms of working together. Obviously he should have reached out before this.)

Nevertheless, Currie is super aggressive, just like he was before, and loves a fight. He seems to have the same huge ego and need to lash out at people he believes are weaker than him and his conservative team. He was doing well during the election in pretending he had changed.

All this said, I am very disappointed that the Liberals would reach out to the NDP first, which appears to be the case, instead of the Yukon Party who had far more votes than either the NDP or Liberals. Maybe they feel the NDP is going to be easier to push around and dismiss after the dealing is done.

I'm glad there's a real opposition now. The previous YP opposition was lame duck. Currie knows that the Liberals and NDP don't have popular support. He can work himself to a majority next time by staying on them.

I guess now that the election is over, Currie Dixon's "nice guy" façade has ended and he revealed his true colours. He is acting like the popular kid in high school who was also a bully and got particularly nasty when he didn't get something he thought he was entitled to.

In this case, he thought he would easily win the election and become Premier, just as he won the Yukon Party leadership. Now that he has been denied that, he is lashing out like a petty child. I'm glad that Hassard is still in the picture to provide some adult supervision.

What is Sandy Silver doing ? Hiding out doing nothing doesn’t change the outcome of the election. This mess is of your making Sandy - you were over confident and arrogant and you have been dealt some reality. Pauline Frost is contesting her riding - how long is that gong to hold things up ? I am no fan of Currie Dixon but he is right - get to work. For once in your tenure as Premiere be honest and do what you say you are going to do - be a leader or step aside.

"It's time to get to work" said Dixon.

Currie and his MLAs were literally just sworn in hours or maybe minutes before he said this and I believe the Liberals were due to be sworn in the next day. Plus, they have likely been in lots of discussions with the NDP on some kind of deal to avoid another election. And most of the MLAs work happens outside of the legislature anyway! So it's a bit rich for him to be beaking off so quickly after being elected. As someone who apparently has a political science background as well, he must obviously know this.

It's time for Currie to stop acting like an arrogant brat.

Sounds like sour grapes. Currie wants to have a legislative sitting, to hear a budget. But he also states he has no intention of supporting Liberals to form a government with NDP and will not support a budget.
Currie, you lost, you have the minority on the right while the majority on the left does not want another election with you out there seeding fear and misconceptions.
Grow up, then try and try again Currie.
