In a few months, the Yukon government will cease funding for the territory’s largest online job board, YuWIN.
In a few months, the Yukon government will cease funding for the territory’s largest online job board, YuWIN.
Rick Karp, the president of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce and vice-chair of YuWIN’s board of directors, said today the funding cut will be a huge loss to the Yukon’s business community.
The website, he told the Star, gets approximately 60,000 in-depth searches a month.
In 2015 alone, it had 3.5 million hits – and not just from the Yukon, but nationwide and outside Canada as well.
“It’s a shame that we could potentially lose such a positive force for the Yukon business community,” Karp said.
YuWIN receives funding from the Department of Education’s advanced learning branch.
Board members first received notice of an impending funding cut a few months ago, but a formal email was distributed a week or two ago, Karp said.
As of March 31, the YuWIN job board will lose Yukon government’s funding.
Karp’s understanding of the rationale for the cut is that the Department of Education handles Canada’s Job Bank in Yukon.
The Government of Canada’s Job Bank has a search option to find Yukon jobs.
Karp, however, argues that it’s not the ideal option for small Yukon businesses looking for employees.
As a business owner himself, Karp said every employee he and his wife, Joy, have hired has been through YuWIN.
“That’s the first one that we think of to post a job,” he said.
The Job Bank, spanning all of Canada, isn’t as locally-focused as Yukon-only YuWIN.
Searches for certain jobs on the Job Bank located in Whitehorse yield fewer results than on YuWIN.
For employers, posting on the Job Bank isn’t as efficient as YuWIN, Karp said.
When posting to the national board, he said, the posting will say it’s “pending.”
“It could be a week or two for the job to go up,” he said.
“YuWIN is very quick.”
Now that the ball has dropped and the funding cut is imminent, YuWIN will be looking into finding another host for the job board.
“We really need that job board to be up and running,” Karp said.
In addition to local job postings, YuWIN’s website provides information about the labour market, career planning, education and training.
Officials from the Department of Education, and minister Doug Graham, were unavailable for comment before the Star’s press deadline this afternoon.

So the business community says: We want this, we need this and it works well.
Minister Graham and the Paz say: Too bad, as government we know better what you want and need.
This whole 'Government always knows best' attitude is getting tiresome. They could cut just ONE position in the idle department of Mines and Resources to fund YuWin, but we all know that won't happen as it would mean losing a vote in an election year.
As for the Chamber of Commerce, they are actually right on this one. Usually they (be it Karp or their board I don't know) just get angry about anything and everything - especially anything related to the environment, recycling etc. They are all about the almighty dollar regardless of whether or not it happens to be good for the community.

So.
The Yukon Chamber of Commerce, should take over the site and have it accessible to the membership exclusively. That should up the number of members right away and the extra fees would cover the costs.

Dearest June Jackson ... you are absolutely correct. Mr. Doug is the same guy who killed off the Yukon Council on Disabilities and put people out of work and interestingly enough it was the same senior bureaucrats in Advanced Education that made the recommendation in both cases.

How can anyone take this guy seriously? Last time I looked Yuwin was renting space in Hair Sensations. I think the business community should thank Mr. Karp for his years of service and get a new spokesperson.

I have heard more whining from the YuWin Board, Rick and a few local businesses. I would suggest that $125k per year is very generous for a website. Oh right. There is an Executive Director pulling in $80k (for what I do not know). I suggest you pare down on the cost , i.e. remove the Executive Director, and have a user-pay system for those businesses posting to the Job Board.

I've used the YuWIN website to find and hire employees. It's a much, much better service than the clunky and slow Job Bank website. Add to the fact that YuWIN staff actually get back to you with answers to questions and are always happy to help; it makes me very sad to hear that YuWIN is being shut down. Surely there must be a way for them to keep going.

I used Yuwin when I lived in Yukon. It was an excellent website and I think it helps alot of people. Service Canada's job bank does not post as many jobs as Yuwin. I think this will dissapoint alot of people.

There is no mention of how much money this website was costing the Department of Education each year.
The Department of Education is responsible for managing the Yukon Nominee Program, and the Yuwin site catered to that by providing the ability to 'advertise jobs', for the required number of weeks. I think the employer is supposed to do the advertising in two places, ie, Yuwin plus Jobs.ca or a local newspaper or whatever. I wonder if this was the reason Yuwin was created in the first place? Not sure if it was actually tied into the Nominee Program (bringing in foreign workers when a Canadian worker could not be found, leading to residency if all goes well.)
I'd like to know what the reasoning was with the department of Education for axing this site, and again, how much it was costing.
It was a good site and I actually used it myself. I got responses from BC, the Yukon, and overseas. Most responses actually were from people overseas seeking to move to Canada under the Nominee Program, which seemed strange to me.

Lots to say about the negative impact on employers. What about Yukoners looking for work?

Our business has used YuWin to find employees, as well as national job banks and head hunters. Our success with Yuwin has been overwhelming over other job posting sites. The fastest way to locate Yukon based employees. The national posting sites have bogged us down with applications from so many other countries, that it becomes difficult to find those special people that have decided to make the Yukon their home.

Every employee hired has been through YuWin Rick? Are you really sure about that?
Epic fail by the Chamber of Commerce for running the TFW program unchecked at full throttle and then whining about this.

Pathetic - why not just close the entire Territory down, at least until commodity prices bottom out. This is a Territory addicted to the welfare handouts from Ottawa. Last one out, please turn off the lights.

Hello Rick...the announced cut to YuWin funding was announced over a year ago. Why wait until the last minute? Also, I understand the Chamber is looking to take over the YuWin site, meaning the funding as well. Let's call it like it is. You want more slush money, but YG has decided a redundant site is not needed. Move on to the next cash cow please.

Well, someone has to feel the pain so the Yukon Party has some extra cash leading up to the next election.

I am not surprised..where ever Graham goes, cuts and job losses follow.
Note to self.. don't forget to vote this guy out.
