REMAINING VIGILANT – Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health, discusses the latest facts around the COVID-19 situation during this morning’s briefing in Whitehorse.

Delta variant surfaces just as schools reopen

Being vaccinated is the most effective method of preventing the spread of COVID-19, it was said repeatedly at this morning’s weekly virus update.

By Chuck Tobin on August 20, 2021

Being vaccinated is the most effective method of preventing the spread of COVID-19, it was said repeatedly at this morning’s weekly virus update.

With the recent arrival of the Delta variant, Premier Sandy Silver and the acting chief medical officer of health, Dr. Catherine Elliott, encouraged unvaccinated Yukoners to roll up their sleeves.

Silver noted that with more than 80 per cent of the eligible population already vaccinated, the territory is leading the country.

But it’s still of the utmost importance to increase the numbers, he insisted.

“To date, the science shows vaccination is effective against known variants, like Delta,” the premier said in the hour-long update.

“If you are actively choosing not to get vaccinated, you are leaving yourself and those around you at risk of getting COVID-19. Immunization remains a very powerful tool that allows us to treat COVID-19 as a largely preventable disease.”

Silver encouraged unvaccinated Yukoners to make an appointment.

“Thank you to each and every Yukoner who has stepped up to receive their two jabs,” he said.

“It is because of you that more than 80 per cent of eligible Yukoners over the age of 12 are now fully vaccinated. We continue to lead the country in vaccine rates.”

Elliott said there are currently 50 active cases, compared with 47 on Wednesday, and 616 Yukoners have recovered.

The acting chief medical officer said the first case of the Delta variant was detected Wednesday, and now there are two.

But Elliott said she expects to see more in the coming days, accompanied by exposure alerts.

The investigations of the two cases announced this week are complete, and their contacts are isolating.

One person with the Delta variant is hospitalized, Wednesday’s report stated.

There are no exposure events within the Yukon associated with these cases.

The Delta variant is more infectious and transmittable, she noted.

Elliott said the Yukon is in a good position, and continued vigilance will help keep it that way.

“I appreciate that this news of the Delta variant may be concerning, and I want to be clear that this transmission occurred outside of the Yukon and that there have been no known exposures to others in the Yukon,” Elliott said Wednesday afternoon in revealing the variant’s arrival.

“We know Delta is on the rise and it is only a matter of time until we see more cases so, Yukoners, please do your part to protect yourself and others and get vaccinated.

Although the territory’s state of emergency is scheduled to end next Wednesday, Yukoners need to maintain practising the safe-6, such as wearing masks in crowded areas, she said during this morning’s briefing.

“I encourage all Yukoners to get vaccinated,” Elliott added.

If Yukoners are worried about how they’ll react to the vaccine, she said, they should talk to their family doctor.

The Yukon, said Elliott, is well prepared as the territory moves out of the pandemic.

The premier said he is confident students, teachers and school staff will remain safe upon their return to school next week.

“I am confident in our K-12 school guidelines for 2021-2022 and that the lessons we have all learned over the past year together with the guidance from the chief medical officer of health will allow us to have a successful school year.” he said.

Students in Dawson City and Pelly Crossing returned this week, he pointed out. Many Whitehorse students will troop back into the classrooms on Monday.

Silver said he was proud to be releasing the document Forging Ahead: The Yukon’s Continuing Response to COVID-19.

“This document, guided by advice from the chief medical officer of health, will pilot the way forward as the Yukon adjusts to living with COVID-19,” he said.

“Our top priority is still protecting the health and safety of Yukoners.”

As the state of emergency will end Wednesday, he said, Forging Ahead helps the Yukon to see that territory has other, more flexible tools to utilize for living with COVID-19.

He said the document contains six pillars that will guide how the Yukon prepares to respond to future surges and inform the ongoing response.

“For example, Pillar 1 centres on First Nations and community partnerships,” said the premier.

“Our partnerships and committed collaboration have made all the difference in managing the virus across the territory.

“Working together makes us stronger and we will ensure close government-to-government communication with First Nations and municipalities continues.”

Municipal leaders have been doing a good job of dismissing false information about the vaccine and promoting safe practices in dealing with the pandemic.

The other pillars are: vaccination; testing and surveillance; surge capacity; social supports for vulnerable people and public health measure.

Forging Ahead will be released to the public shortly, if it hasn’t already been, he said.

“We shaped Forging Ahead with the knowledge that social connection, physical and mental health, and economic vitality are fundamental to how we need to move on with our recovery and beyond.”

Elliott noted that a rapid response team was sent to Ross River to assist with a surge in cases (see story below).

Both Elliott and Silver extended gratitude to the health care professionals for the work they have been doing since the pandemic broke out 17 months ago.

Silver said the thoughts of Yukoners are with the communities of Haines, Alaska and Good Hope in the N.W.T. who are currently experiencing large numbers of active cases.

A total of eight Yukoners have died from COVID-19 since November 2020.

See letter to Silver and Elliott.

"A quick duckduckgo search"

People don't even know what goes on a block from their house, lmao. But somehow everyone is a big expert on everything. "Well this is happening in the Middle East" No, it's not. You're told what they want you to believe. Can you prove anything you say or hear? Highly doubtful. "Well, I read it on the internet" I bet you did, I bet you did, lol.

About 98% of what you think you know is propaganda. END . OF . STORY. You're just to lazy to do any actual research.

As Covid cases increase to record highs in 75% vaccinated Iceland - with half those hospitalised vaxxed - its Govt has conceded vaccinating has not led to herd immunity.
“It has become clear that vaccinated people can easily contract it as well as spread it to others,” the country’s Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason says.
https://www.icelandreview.com/society/covid-19-in-iceland-vaccination-has-not-led-to-herd-immunity-says-chief-epidemiologist/

A belief that 90% of Covid hospitalizations are not vaccinated is facile exaggeration not supported by factual evidence.

A quick duckduckgo search will show you that the vaccines are working and that is backed up by 90% of hospitalizations are non-vaccinated people. The efficiency rate drops off as the variants mutate but is still at a very high rate even for delta. The vaccinated might just get the sniffles instead of hospitalization with severe ongoing conditions. Do your own simple internet search and don't believe the incessant dogma being presented by constant sore losers of elections.

You may recall last December-ish around the globe politcians of every stripe were heralding the vaccine as the saviour to the pandemic. The " experimental " vaccines approved for emergency applications. So here we are some months later and the performance of the vaccines is being revealed. Turns out they are not the panacea all the governments thought or hoped they would be. There is also no Plan B, C or D.

Do you know.... on Aug 21, 2021 at 7:39 pm

Do you know why Silver uses the word “jabs,” rather than “vaccinations?” It’s because he knows the jabs don’t meet the definition for “vaccine”.

The U.S. FDA is warning people not to take Ivermectin to prevent or treat CV19. Best to listen to the advice of the vast majority of experts rather the those on the fringe or random FB people that think they know more than people who have spent their entire careers dealing with viruses.

There is no test for the delta variant on Aug 21, 2021 at 11:03 am

8 Yukoners have died in 9 months, most of whom died WITH, not of, Covid. Meanwhile, I personally know 3 who fatally overdosed and 5 who died within two months or less of being vaxxed. Most of the new cases are among the vaxxed, at least they are in jurisdictions that report honestly. Now it appears since we ditched Hanley, Yukon is Canada's trailblazer in lifting the restrictions (while leaving the hysteria-mongering rhetoric in place and telling us we have to learn not to be scared.) Everyone who is willing to wake up has done so, and is tired of the Covid dance. Enough already.

Fully vaccinated. I don’t just mean Moderna’s COVID jab. Childhood vaccines, boosters, hepatitis shots in school, compulsory vaccines from two decades of international travel with the little yellow immunization logbook stuffed in beside the passport to prove it…

No extra limbs or third eyes so far. No diseases, no prescription medication, no unusual pathology of any kind. Elitist prick sometimes, sure, but it’s not contagious.

If you’re eligible, but hesitant I can understand up to a point. Maybe you didn’t want to be first. See how it went for the rest of us. That makes sense. Now though, there’s been enough time to sift through the mountains of anti-vax BS. There’s no more zombies staggering down the streets than there was pre-pandemic. The ‘plandemic’ has turned out to reveal only a conspiracy of incompetence among overpaid bureaucrats and nothing more.

With the kids back in school interconnecting thousands of households and the cold weather on the way… please take another look at your decision. Drop the social media and the bong hits for a week. Read some actual information once your head clears.

Look at what's happening in Israel, the most injected country in the world:

"Nearly 60% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Israel fully vaccinated, data shows"
https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/public-health/nearly-60-of-hospitalized-covid-19-patients-in-israel-fully-vaccinated-study-finds.html

We need clear and honest info from our public officials. Please specify that these covid injections are still at the experimental stage, and they don't prevent getting infected with covid or transmitting that virus, and you can still get very sick.

Please Dr., as per your medical oath, also mention therapeutics like Ivermectin that have shown efficacy for treatment of covid. Look up "Frontline Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance" for numerous studies showing the safety and efficacy of Ivermectin for treating covid.

And how about some info on boosting ones' immune system: healthy diet, exercise in fresh air & sunshine, Vitamin D, plenty or rest, positive attitude.

Trudeau just admitted that the experimental covid “vaccine” doesn’t work.
Too funny.
Quoting Trudeau: “If you don’t want to get vaccinated that’s your choice, but don’t think you can get on a plane or a train beside vaccinated people and put them at risk.”

In my opinion, it is criminal that Hanley, Elliott and Silver are pushing vaccines for young people. The evidence is abundantly clear that young people are virtually impervious to the serious effects of covid.

"Being vaccinated is the most effective method of preventing the spread of COVID-19"
There is lots of evidence to show that vaccination does NOT prevent the spread of SARS-COV-2. Besides, vaccination is intended to protect the individual being jabbed -- not society at large.

Just gonna put those kids on the altar of economic and political convenience. Can't pay people to stay home, and can't radically restructure education.

Nope.
Let's just roll the dice on some kids. What could go wrong? We're on a winning streak!

Ugh. Vaccination still allows one to transmit the virus to someone else and get the virus even if vaccinated, ergo it is not the most effective way, but may decrease your symptoms.

I do encourage everyone who is able, to get vaccinated. But, I don't approve of it being mandatory. If citizens can be pro choice for things like abortion, then pro choice for the vaccination should be included.
It's been reported that several people who took the vaccine also got the virus later. I did some research when the vaccine came out. Anyone who takes the vaccine should not drink alcohol or do street drugs ie marijuana at least 7 days before the vaccination and at least 7 - 10 days after. Now, I know that can be a problem with many people. But, it should be done. I'm no doctor, but perhaps in many cases, that is why so many people are getting the virus after the vaccination. Something to think about.
