Daycare worker tests positive for virus

By Whitehorse Star on November 25, 2020

An employee of a Whitehorse daycare has tested positive for COVID-19, it was announced this morning.

The employee is self-isolating and recovering well at home, Dr. Brendan Hanley, the territory’s chief medical officer of health, said in a statement.

The name of the daycare is not being made public. Its owner has closed it until Nov. 30.

Children who had contact with the employee have been contacted directly by Yukon Communicable Disease Control (YCDC) staff and instructed to self-isolate through the morning of Dec. 1.

“I understand this is a time of heightened anxiety and fear, but you must trust that the Government of Yukon is taking the proper measures to protect all Yukoners,” Hanley said.

“Anyone who has been at risk of exposure will be notified. If YCDC does not contact you, this means that you and your child are not considered to be at risk.”

He is encouraging parents to keep their children in daycares.

“Please be patient; if you are not contacted, there is no cause for concern. If you have any concerns, please reach out to the COVID-19 information line or refer to Yukon.ca before removing your child from daycare.”

If you are or your child is experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, contact the COVID-19 Testing and Assessment centre at 393-3083 in Whitehorse to arrange for testing.

Seems to me the only reasonable approach is to assume that everyone you will come in contact with could have Covid, and to assume that I may have it without symptoms, and then behave accordingly. It's a nuisance, it's lonely, but it's doable. And if we all follow that plan, we may get to look back on this.

@john,
Yes, I do still think it's a good answer.
You - as a parent - could mitigate risk by not allowing your daughter to hang out with children outside your family bubble. Don't try and pass the buck.

I don't trust what they're doing or how they treating us. Don't expect my collaboration, Mr Dr.. You wanna hold all the cards? Play by yourself.

@Matthew. So where do you get a .01% mortality rate of infected people? Based upon the Coronavirus numbers listed on Worldometer, it looks to me like a mortality rate closer to 2.33% based on all cases from the start of this thing. Mortality rates have been coming down, but to tout a .01% mortality rate seems misleading.

To John. Sounds like you are not keeping your bubble small, especially with an elderly person coming in contact with your daughter, who is playing with other friends. If you have the name of the daycare, it is likely too late to take any precautions. Keep your family safe using all the suggested precautions, which might mean no contact with grandma.

@ SA... so my daughter could be friends with one of the kids that attends that day care and say, if the parents chose not to say anything ( for whatever reason), and say their kid gave covid to my kid and my kid gave it to my elderly mother and none of us had the opportunity to take precautions because we didn't know... still think it's a good answer?

The issue... on Nov 26, 2020 at 6:42 pm

Those of us working with the public want to know which businesses and areas are affected. Why? Because the worker, the children who go there and anybody else associated with the daycare could give it to us. Seems to me the people making the decisions don't have to work with the public, be exposed or feel any of the unease the rest of use feel. Those 'decision makers' are at home working comfortably....and I don't care what the folks say about Better Bodies being a public place so they get publicly shamed.
The amount of people associated with a daycare and the siblings/students public school affected are vast. The worker has potentially infected the children there; they bring it home to their parents and their siblings; their siblings bring it to school...and then we have a full blown out of control situation. Not handled properly....and not right to crucify BB while you give this business special treatment.

Wilf: There's no money for this kind of project. It's all going to left wing liberal vote buying programs and of course the non-contributors, which take up at least 1/2 the population of Canada. It takes a lot of money to run a Communist state.

TMYK, now Josey didn't have his colours mixed up. Blue is Conservative, Red is Liberal/Communist. It's the other way around in the US.

KC...your flaw..."the honour system"
so, apples to apples. Of course depending on the seeds one may have red apples, they are preferred around here I think. Heaps of green apples, often very sour and bitter but yup heaps of them green apples too migrate here.
Back to the Red ones, there are many sub families of red apples with not all holding equal caloric or monetary value...ie not all apples are actually equal.
All apples still mind you, these days can identify as an orange so even factoring that "awesome" progressive value...my argument stands.

hey TMYK...not speaking Yankee politics, the metric one "Ours" is what.
How are the colors wrong?

OJW PSA Liberal ideologies and perception of what constitutes "public safety"
has more to suggest supporting said values is akin to a mental illness if not class warfare.

Some mind blowing news out east in Toronto this am, storm troopers called in to close a restaurant...approx 60 armed police and mounted too.
Whilst BLM and other radicals occupy the town square for near a month...
Statues came down, riots all cool with many "enforcement types" ....wow!

Star check that out, right outta Nazi Germany 80 years back.

Josey Wales - A gym is a public place and the only way to know for sure who was there for sure is a public notification. A daycare has a roster of kids and a list of who is approved to pick up kids. Way easier to contact trace. Apples and oranges.

10 months ago Federal liberals knew CV19 was a problem for health of Canadians. At that time it was very clear that something had to be done to make a drug to help our society through this challenging situation. Vaccine was the direction we needed as has been done in the past.
Why didn't the Federal liberals put in place a system so we could produce our own drugs and not rely on other countries around the world to fix our problems?
By the lack of action by our federal government we are left behind again.

Jane Whittington on Nov 25, 2020 at 5:11 pm

The difference is that a gym is open to the public. Anybody can drop in there and use the facilities. But a daycare has a fixed, closed clientele. So naming the gym matters for a reason that naming the daycare doesn't. Parents have been told, of course, but there's no public-health reason to name the daycare publicly. #Sheesh

The name of the daycare would be nice.

I feel like we are being spoon fed information

Why aren’t we entitled to know the name of the daycare? What are the circumstances of the newest case? We know that children can be asymptomatic and still spread the virus. How will we know if this is happening? We’re being asked to trust that if we haven’ been contacted, there’s no cause for concern. I’m skeptical about that. How did we end up with all these sudden cases if people are ‘doing the right thing?’ It makes no sense to me.

Seriously what is with this absolute nonsensical way the doctor and government is naming some businesses where possible Covid exposure happened and not others?

Up 29 Down 42

Matthew on Nov 25, 2020 at 3:23 pm

What's going on right now is something straight out of a non fiction novel. The entire world scared of a virus that kills 0.01% of people infected.. no matter how you spin it, it will never make sense.. know the bigger picture folks. Research "Event 201", maybe take a gander at the UN agenda 2030 too. We live in a backwards world where non elected officials are calling the shots!

Church, gym, restaurants can be named, but not a daycare? What if a person delivering mail to that centre walked in that day, and need to know if they are asymptomatic?

Sooner or later people will recognize an emerging pattern as to the carriers of COVID. Self isolation with family doesn't work. So how do you self isolate when you are living with extended family and friends?

hmmmm..."The name of the daycare is not being made public. Its owner has closed it until Nov. 30."
Different than a gym is it?
Lemme guess the Gym owner had a blue sign in his yard last election cycle?
Suggests that just maybe the day care had a red one?
