The Yukon government is still looking for new accommodation for the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program and Child Development Centre in Dawson City.

During Wednesday's question period in the legislature, Sandy Silver, the Liberal MLA for Klondike, queried Health and Social Services Minister Doug Graham on his progress in trying to find a new location for the two organizations.

"They contacted the Minister of Health and Social Services some time ago, but have received no direction to date,” said Silver.

"On their behalf, I raised the issue in the house last December and again earlier this month, but I am also still waiting.

"When is the minister going to respond to these community groups, and will it be before they are forced to close their doors to their current location?” he asked.

The programs are currently being run out of a rented home. However, the landlord wants to move back into the house and gave them a year's notice to find other accommodation, which they have not been able to find.

Graham said his department has been trying to find alternative accommodation through both its resources and the Yukon Housing Corp.

"However, to date, we have not been successful,” he said.

Both programs are funded by Health Canada.

"It provides subsidies such as food, shelter and childcare, which they make available to support mothers travelling to Whitehorse for delivery,” Graham said of the prenatal program.

Scott Kent, the minister responsible for the housing corporation, said he is hopeful something can be worked out for the organization.

"But it is very specific space that they are looking for — more along the lines of a house, and that is simply not available through the housing corporation or through the government at this time,” he said.

In an interview today, Silver said the housing corporation is renovating some of its older houses that have been sitting vacant, but those will be set aside for staff of the new hospital now under construction.

Graham said the government is still working on the issue and is hopeful something will come available.

Silver said today these organizations provide valuable services that in the end save the government money.

"Any money that you put into early childhood development saves governments money in education later on, in mental health services later on,” he said.

"There aren't very many ministries that aren't touched by the good work done by these agencies.”

Silver said he can sympathize that the minister's hands are tied by the current housing situation in Dawson, but suggested looking into housing these organizations in the new hospital.

"This is a really big issue,” he said.

"These organizations do great work and every single program that comes out of there is worthwhile.”
