Current mayor unimpressed

Dawson Mayor Peter Jenkins, who reportedly shook his head as he left the Dawson courtroom Thursday, says ex-mayor Glen Everitt could have fared worse in his sentencing.

Dawson Mayor Peter Jenkins, who reportedly shook his head as he left the Dawson courtroom Thursday, says ex-mayor Glen Everitt could have fared worse in his sentencing.

"Mr. Everitt appears to have got off very lightly compared to what the rest of the citizens and taxpayers did,” Jenkins told the Star this morning.

He added that Everitt "probably sent Dawson back a decade” in terms of its finances, and residents of Dawson and taxpayers are now faced with repairing the enormous fiscal damage.

Everitt told the court Wednesday he'd like to pursue business studies at a southern institution, then return to Dawson to pay off his debt.

Well Kimberly, you certainly must be admired for your loyalty, but that would be all.

Peter judges harshly in this moment and some might say he always has.

None of the comments in this string berate his past accomplishments but rather, focus on his high handedness especially given his past shortcomings with the law that we all know about, and that he seems to think don't matter.

Just because one is competent as you've described, does not give moral license to pass judgement as he has and in the manner he does. We all know you see that, as hard as it is to accept such a point of view.

Its admirable that you've come to his defence, but nonetheless your posting misses the point. Peter puts his pants on each day the same as the rest of us, and from what we see, he has not been anointed judge and jury yet, let alone high ground's commentator.

When all is said and done, Peter went down a dark road like the man he critiques.....said critique being quite hypocritical and so very snobby of him.

And now that you've joined the fray and left your innocence at the garden gate, you have to realize that people will see your willing shortsightedness for what it is.....blind loyalty, which of course many relationships could benefit from. So I respect you for that, but not for your analysis of the situation.

If a man gets voted in as mayor for 14 years, MLA for two consecutive terms, and then back to mayor, he must be competent. The town has spoken.

I am glad that Dawson is back in the hands of Peter.

He has put in his time and then some, and is an informed and competent leader - and has made many great decisions for the community....which often get failed to be mentioned.

If anyone can repair the damage that has been done, I am confident that Peter can.

And if Karma is waiting for him, so be it. I do not believe that Peter needs to fear Karma.

I kinda think that Glen's crime is more of mismanagement and ignorance than out and out theft..i'm glad he isn't doing jail time..his kids need him..

You're living in a glass house Pete.. Karma is waiting for you...

I must admit I had a chuckle reading that Peter says Glen could have faired worse. I guess Jenkins is talking from past experience.

Well, that was a long time ago, he did his time and returned to Dawson with head held high. And was elected MLA over and over, and now mayor! What a town.

Thomas Brewer, you are too kind. On the one hand Jenkins did the crime and did the time. On the other, how can someone stand in the bully pulpit of the mayoralty and tut-tut a predecessor who went down a wrong road too. Jenkins seems to be inspired to pass judgement with ease. Well, as they say, if you live by the sword, you die by the sword....he will want to keep squeaky clean as mayor lest the rest of us take him up on the standard and example he just set with his judgemental approach.

So ironic to have Peter-meter-stealer complain about the light-handedness of the courts in dealing with another crooked politician.
