Three new fires were reported over the weekend, Yukon Wildland Fire Management said this morning.
The public reported a fire near the Kusawa Lake Road west of Whitehorse on Sunday night.
The Mendenhall Volunteer Fire Department and initial attack crews from Whitehorse and Haines Junction attacked the fire. An air tanker group worked to contain it late into the evening.
The five-hectare fire is about 10 kilometres down the Kusawa Lake Road from the Alaska Highway.
Due to the dry and windy conditions, the blaze remained active late into the night. Eight firefighters and three water tenders remained on the fire overnight.
About 23 firefighters were expected to work on the blaze this evening, along with a helicopter to provide bucket support. The air tankers are ready to supply additional help if required.
There is currently no immediate threat to structures, and the Kusawa Lake Road remains open. The fire is estimated at five hectares and the cause is currently under investigation.
There were two other fires reported over the weekend. A cabin owner on the Fish Lake Road reported two abandoned burn piles. Crews extinguished the debris piles, which were burning without a permit.
On Saturday morning, a fire burning in the wilderness zone of the Ross River district was spotted on MODIS near the South MacMillan River.
There is no property in the area and the fire, estimated at 25 hectares, is being monitored. The fire is believed to be human-caused.
The public is reminded to be cautious when having a campfire and to report any wildfires they may notice to 1-888-798-FIRE (3473)
So far this year there have been 10 fires in the territory, all of which have been human-caused.
