A successful burn-off procedure was conducted Wednesday on the Cassiar Bar fire located 20 kilometres downstream from the confluence of the Teslin and Yukon rivers in the Carmacks district.
The work was done to remove fuels near the identified values, Yukon Wildland Fire Management officials said today.
Lower temperatures and more precipitation should help reduce fire behaviour in the area, officials said.
It remains 13, 500 hectares in size. River travel is permitted, but travellers are advised not to stop in the area of the fire and keep to the middle of the river.
The Tatchun Lake campground northeast of Carmacks remains closed because of the blaze east of the campground and the heavy smoke in the area.
The Frenchman Lake campground and the Nunatuk campground are now open. Travellers, however, should note that because there is heavy smoke in the area, fire conditions could change by the hour.
The Frenchman Lake and Nunatuk campgrounds may have to be closed on short notice.
A combination of favourable weather and crew efforts has resulted in significant progress on the Tisigar Lake fire, officials said.
More than 170 personnel have worked to place sprinkler systems on potentially threatened structures in the area, assess and remove identified danger trees along the 10 kilometres of affected highway, and establish more than 8.3 kilometres of control lines along the base and head of the fire.
The highway is now open, but drivers are reminded to proceed with caution as firefighters are still working in the area. Please visit drivebc.ca or call 1-800-842-4122 for more information.
Campfires are permitted, but the public is asked to conduct their burning in a safe manner and only if absolutely necessary.
Permits are mandatory and will be suspended if the danger rating is above the low rating.
