COVID up sharply here; virus explodes in Haines

COVID-19 case numbers leapt Thursday in the Yukon.

By Whitehorse Star on August 13, 2021

COVID-19 case numbers leapt Thursday in the Yukon.

In his daily report released Thursday afternoon, Dr. Jesse Kancir, the acting chief medical officer of health, announced nine new cases of COVID-19 were discovered from noon Wednesday to noon Thursday.

The number of active cases is currently at 45.

According to the report, two cases are out-of-territory residents diagnosed in the Yukon.

Three residents are from rural Yukon and four are from Whitehorse.

Kancir had previously reported two new cases from noon Tuesday to noon Wednesday.

Since June 1, 534 people have recovered and six people have died, five of whom were unvaccinated and one partially vaccinated. A total of eight people have died from COVID-19 since November 2020.

In related news, the Ross River Dena Council advises all community members that as of 10 p.m. Thursday, the number of active cases involving members of the community has risen to five after three new cases were confirmed.

“Two of the new positives were linked to previous cases, and one case is still under investigation. Contact tracing is under way,” reads a report posted on Facebook from the council.

“All three of the new cases are now self-isolating in Ross River, and the two cases that were confirmed last week are self-isolating in Whitehorse.

“Based on the current spike of COVID-19 in our community, council is asking everyone to take every possible precaution in the days ahead to help keep our elders, our families and the most vulnerable members of our community safe.”

In addition to the new cases, the council said, it’s aware that “multiple community members are respectfully self-isolating following numerous exposures to a positive case last week.

“Thank you to everyone who is making this important sacrifice to help keep Ross River safe.

“Council is concerned, however, that there are some individuals who are not following self-isolation guidelines after travelling outside of the territory.

“While this safety measure is no longer mandated by the territorial government, Ross River Dena Council is still asking community members to self-isolate for 14 days after travel if unvaccinated.

“While the vaccination rate in the Yukon may be over 80 per cent, the vaccination rate in Ross River remains under 50 per cent – still the lowest vaccination rate in the territory, and the highest risk of infection of any rural population.”

As well, 11 new positive cases were reported Thursday in Haines, Alaska, bringing the total up to 57.

All patients are symptomatic.

The mayor has conceded that the uptake may be related to the visitors the recent Southeast Alaska State Fair attracted.

Another case was reported in Skagway on Thursday.

“There is concern for community spread,” the city warned in a notice.

Last Monday, Canada began admitting vaccinated American motorists into the country – five days after the Yukon relaxed its masking, isolation, and restaurant/bar capacity requirements.

@ yukon max... so tired of all the rhetoric from super human vaccinated crew. You chose to protect yourself with a substance not yet approved by FDA. That's your choice, your risk and I respect that. The vaccine is showing, at this time, that it reduces the severity of illness with some variants. It does not eliminate your ability to transmit the virus nor to prevent the virus from mutating. Based on the loss of effectiveness in antibiotics from overuse one could argue the vaccine may not be the best approach. That being said, why do you care if someone is not vaccinated? it does not affect you. And if you feel unvaccinated people may tax the medical system (stats % doesn't really support this), then look at smokers, drinkers, drug users, obese people and every other preventable illness "socially acceptable freedoms" and maybe even consider the abortion " pro choice" debate.

For my last "Covid" comment; Vaccines are available now and they have been for quite some time. So, protect yourselves and loved ones and just get it.
The ones that do not want the shot, please, please don't get it.
I bless the natural triage of the simple minds.

My Opinion on Aug 17, 2021 at 8:15 pm

Do you suppose the opening up of the Yukon, mask regs dropped, Borders to Alaska opened one way for US travellers. Could this have anything to do with Hanley's bid to run for the Liberals? No, what are you thinking????

We were locked down when we were not even getting a single case for two months, but now is a good time to open up. Remember as the good Dr says, follow the science. No wonder no one trusts this propaganda.

So what I would like to know is the time lines, when did Hanley decide to run? Timing is everything.
Personally I will vote for a candidate that is honest, and stands behind his comments and statements. Jonas you have my vote.

Don't look now, but Delta's on its way - If you pay me another 750 grand, I'll be sure to make it go away!
And just in time for my sabbatical to Ottawa - yay!

Perhaps JT (so dashing with a touch of grey), sees me as future Health Min., given my courageous leadership display?
Not that I did much in my current role anyway...
Time for a change - on up, and forward I say!

We'll soon care less about case numbers on Aug 16, 2021 at 5:12 pm

....and care more about hospitalizations and deaths. DL, you're correct that it seems vaccinated people can transmit the virus (although the viral load decreases much more quickly than with unvaccinated people). But as the number of vaccinated people continues to rise, it'll mainly be the unvaccinated who will be in ICU's and hospital beds, based on what's happening everywhere.

Anybody noticed that we suddenly get increases in 'cases' when the border is open to the vaccinated?
Studies have shown that vaxxed people do transmit the virus.

See NATURE’s August 12, 2021 article entitled “HOW DO VACCINATED PEOPLE SPREAD DELTA”.
Quote: “Data from COVID-19 tests in the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore are showing that vaccinated people who become infected with Delta SARS-CoV-2 can carry as much virus in their nose as do unvaccinated people. This means that despite the protection offered by vaccines, a proportion of vaccinated people can pass on Delta, possibly aiding its rise.”

Joe, I sort of see your argument on Aug 15, 2021 at 12:43 pm

although I don't know where you're getting your numbers from (I'm looking at https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=1310039401). I agree that more should be done to battle diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, accidents (nearly 14,000 deaths in 2019). With the exception of Influenza and pneumonia (6893 deaths in 2019), I can't see any causes of death that result from a virus, or that could be avoided or lessened with a vaccine.

@oh joe... so sorry you didn't understand the comment. 100 people die each day from smoking , whether first hand or second hand, check those stats and,” In 2018, using a Health Canada-funded study, we estimated each year some 15,000 deaths, 90,000 hospital admissions and 240,000 years of life lost are directly attributable to alcohol use.” And It is estimated that one in 10 premature deaths among Canadian adults age 20 to 64 is directly attributable to obesity. So who cares about your covid stats and mandated vaccines in comparison to all the other “ freedoms “ we overlook. Point is if you want to remove freedoms from me for choosing not to risk a vaccine (pro choice) , maybe you should look around at the health care issues.

good for you, Neville on Aug 14, 2021 at 5:03 pm

Lots of misinformation out there, sadly- I'm glad you did your own research and have decided to get vaccinated.

bonanzajoe, you guess wrong on Aug 14, 2021 at 12:46 pm

Numbers are available at health Canada. But you're flailing - those have nothing to do with covid, nor do cancer, heart disease, accidents, etc., etc.

Oh, Joe on Aug 14, 2021 at 12:42 pm

Your comparisons don't even make sense - aside from none of those things you mentioned being contagious, there are rules and laws against smoking on public transportation, and drunk-driving. As for being overweight, well again those folks aren't harming anyone but themselves. You need to find better 'what abouts'.

I used to be against the vaccine due to some personal issues with a health care worker and misinformation on the internet.
Finally did some proper research and now have my 1st dose.

Oh no.....no another covid outbreak. Where is this outbreak data coming from.....if it's the PCR test then there's a problem. If you can isolate the CV19 virus culture on the end of the swab used in the PCR test and prove that it's really there, then you have proof of an outbreak.....if not it's fake. The person who invented the PCR test has publically stated this fact. All the PCR test produce is a "fluorescent light" and if that light is present then they determine CV19 is present.... but they also use a "special chemical" to create the "special light"....and they can change that special chemical to create a + or - CV19 test. So the system is rigged in the favor of who administers the test.

Each day, 100 Canadians die of a smoking-related illness. This from health Canada. I think we should have a non smoking passport to limit smokers from accessing airplanes and trains and workplaces to protect the rest of the public. I mean that’s what’s coming right. Same passport for non drinkers, to get a license, I mean we need to keep the roads safe! Hey how about an overweight passport too!

How about telling us how many people in Canada died from seasonal flu and pneumonia. My guess, much more than covid.

This is why a national election is a bad idea. Hanley is out politicking instead of being on the job. The reopening scheme is a gateway to disaster.
