COVID sub-variant isn’t straining system: Silver

Despite some increases in COVID-19 figures, the Yukon government is staying the course of loosened restrictions for the time being.

By Whitehorse Star on March 25, 2022

Despite some increases in COVID-19 figures, the Yukon government is staying the course of loosened restrictions for the time being.

That’s the word from Premier Sandy Silver, who spoke to reporters Thursday afternoon about the situation. His remarks came almost a week after the government lifted most of its remaining health restrictions.

As of Thursday afternoon, there were 81 active cases and 13 new cases, according to the COVID-19 dashboard. The testing positivity rate is 42.6 per cent.

Silver touched on the news that a new sub-variant of Omicron is now in the territory.

“As with every wave, we try to get the best statistics about what’s happening,” Silver said.

The Star had attempted to contact Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health for comment Thursday on that strain.

She was not available.

Silver said the information he’s receiving from Elliott is that this new strain is potentially not any more dangerous than Omicron, and the existing vaccines are capable of handling it.

Silver told reporters it will take two or three weeks to confirm that the territorial health system won’t be strained by new cases.

“No cause for alarm yet, which is good, but we don’t currently have any strain on our health care system.”

Elliott hasn’t made a formal announcement as to the presence of the new variant, Silver was told – somewhat to his surprise.

He said he would speak to his deputy ministers about the lack of public communication and relay the concerns to Elliott’s office.

“You’d have to ask the acting chief medical officer of health about that,” he said. “If there was a concern, you’d see a press conference right now.

“If the chief medical officer of health needs to communicate, they are an independent office and they will do so,” the premier added.

“We will still have some updates, for sure, but it’d be nice of we got to the point we don’t have to.

“We’re going to see variants for years to come,” he predicted.

The current case numbers, which peaked in the low 80s earlier this week, are still considered to be manageable, he said.

“There has not been a spike, and there’s not been any strain on our health care system,” he reiterated.

Silver also said the high testing positivity rate being seen for the last week is only one piece of data to be used, and that the public shouldn’t read too much into it.

That rate is commonly used to provide some insight as to how much community transmission is occurring, and how many cases are not being identified.

“I caution that being a concerning number,” Silver said. “To me, it’s a piece of information like a sample size. To me, it’s (more important) to look at our hospitals and our communities.”

As long as Omicron is the prevailing strain circulating, and hospitalization rates don’t rise, Silver added, active cases in the 50-100 range are manageable.

If a more dangerous variant, such as Delta, would account for the majority of cases, the government would take a different approach.

“With Delta, I would be very concerned. But our boosters and second shots are lower then as well.

“As long as we don’t have a strain on our health systems, we need to try to get back to normal. We need to socialize.”

@Roy
You are sounding more and more like Dicky Mostyn who is always tabling media clips about what he percieves the Official Opposition supports and doesn't.
Why these provinces did or did not support the direction of the federal Liberals can probably be found by reading their Hansard documents, go ahead and read them if it is so important to you. Myself I find this debate to be petty & I have many better things to waste my time on.

@groucho

Then explain why the Conservatives at the *federal* level were also on board with vaccine mandates and lockdowns.
And explain why the conservative premiers are such pushovers. Seems weak and spineless.

And health care is funded by the feds but managed at a provincial level. Each province handles things differently. Face it - the 6 Conservative premiers were on board with vaccine mandates and lockdowns. Some of which were much stricter than the Yukon’s. Explain that - if they were just doing it to appease the federal Liberals why were they stricter than the Liberal provinces?

Your theory falls apart with the slightest scrutiny.

@Roy
The Federal government is responsible for funding many of the programs delivered by the provinces and territories. Of course the Conservative-led jurisdictions are towing the COVID line created by the Feds. Otherwise our spiteful Prime Misery may punish them in some way. He has demonstrated he is that petty by freezing bank accounts of other protesters that did not agree with him. Who knows what he may be capable of with his popularity falling like a rock from coast to coast to coast?

Paid liberal shill? The liberals suck.
I guess you can’t read. Or remember. I’ve said the liberals suck on here many times.

Try to keep up ok? Try to open your mind. Just because I clearly proved that the same lockdowns and mandates occurred in the 6 Conservative led provinces and that the federal Conservatives were fully on board doesn’t mean I like the Liberals.
It seems like that is too complicated an idea for you to grasp. Maybe ask an adult you trust to help explain it to you.

@roy oh you poor little liberal crusader. Everyone knows you're a paid liberal troll, just as everyone knows the liberal feds coerced the provinces into unnecessary mandates and divisive policies. Yukon libs towed the line, Shamley got a job and who knows what backdoor deals were made in the guise of covid. It's a sad time for Canada and Yukon, were headed for financial hardship and things will never be the same. We are divided, we are in debt and we are far from over it.

Then please explain the vax mandates and societal restrictions and mask mandates instituted by the 6 Conservative premiers in Canada and supported publicly by the federal Conservatives.

We’ll wait for your answer…

Mandatory Requirements.. My mistake on Mar 29, 2022 at 12:39 pm

I missed that these were requirements for 'unvaccinated' travelers... For 'vaccinated' travelers, it's the monitor for symptoms/keep track of contacts for 14 days requirement

Mandatory requirements? on Mar 29, 2022 at 6:37 am

Just returned from several weeks out of the country, and these were not the instructions we were given. I can't see the date on the link provided, but perhaps outdated? We were told to monitor ourselves for symptoms for 14 days, and keep track of contacts and places visited for 14 days. Not unreasonable, I'd say.

Lynx on Mar 26,. At least Keean Bexte gets out on the street and digs out the truth. Not so much your favorite Liberal taxpayer funded CBC, who has to support the untruths of their master god in Ottawa so he will support their annual budget of 1.2 billion dollars plus. Keean works on a shoe string, but gets out the truth. And lord knows, the left can't handle the truth.

COVID-19 outbreak declared at Whitehorse hospital.
Anyone who has been paying attention during the plandemic should know how thoroughly masked and C0vax-mandated WGH is. Therefore this 'outbreak' is absolutely irrefutable proof that hospital masks and the C0vax are completely ineffective in stopping the spread of C0vid in any venue. As well, this proves that the LIBgov vax-mandates are totally about some other agenda, not C0vid.

Easing of restrictions cannot be rationalized through political diatribes. The population has become disillusioned, simple as that.

The "authorities" cannot destroy an economy, destroy private businesses, assault the mental health of an entire society, then have nothing to show for it except a massive increase in deaths and a transfer of wealth away from the people. Someone will notice, the masses will catch on sooner or later.

The veil has been lifted. The damage done is obvious to all, except those who are blind to the obvious. These people are delusional. The delusional hold onto false judgments with extraordinary conviction and subjective certainty, resistant to contrary experience and counter-argument. With their hearts twisted, they will make themselves into what twisted them.

Covid has run its course. It is now time to tackle harmful content and conduct online, and to rid the world of red meat.

Omicron does not seem to have strained our hospital system at all.
Let's look at a few one month snapshots from the Yukon Government's COVID dashboard:

- Gamma wave (June 15 - July 15) total hospitalizations increased from 10 to 47 = 37 new hospitalization.
- Delta Wave (November 1- December 1) total hospitalizations increased from 86 to 109 = 23 new hospitalizations.
- Omicron Wave (January 1 - February 1) total hospitalizations increased from 117 to 125 = 8 new hospitalization.

And some three month comparisons:

- June-Aug 2021 = total hospitalizations increased from 8 to 77 = 69 new hospitalizations.
- Oct-Dec 2021 = total hospitalizations increased from 82 to 117 = 35 new hospitalizations.
- Jan-Mar 2022 = total hospitalizations increased from 117 to 128 = 11 new hospitalizations.

There's currently a covid outbreak among staff at the Whitehorse General hospital. Fact is, all these health care workers were vaxed for covid. It then follows that the covax is NOT reducing transmission of the covid virus, which seems to mostly affect the vaxed these days.
WHY then is the covax STILL mandated for boarding a plane or train within Canada?? When will this government admit that the feds mandates make absolutely no sense? There's an agenda here, and it's not about health.

The European parliament folks have figured out Trudeau, even if Canadian media won't mention it:

Wait - there are still covid outbreaks occurring yet restrictions are loosening across the country just like the governments say they would? Both in the liberal led places and in the 6 provinces with conservative leaders that also have vaccine mandates and restrictions?

This flies in the face of what the tinfoil hat fringe 5% promised would happen.
What gives? If this is a liberal power grab then 1) why are there 6 provinces with conservative leaders with the same covid mandates and restrictions? Why did the federal conservatives also support vaccine mandates and lockdowns? Are you saying they are so weak and spineless that they got bullied into it?

And 2) if it’s a liberal power grab why is Sandy loosening up restrictions?
Seems the fringe 5% has some explaining (let’s call it rationalizing) to do…

“We’re going to see variants for years to come,” Silver predicted. So get out of our lives and let us deal with it ourselves. And stop putting fear in us.
