COVID safety measures set to continue indefinitely
Even after four weeks of no active COVID-19 cases, no relief is in sight from the virus safety measures.
By Whitehorse Star on February 11, 2021
Revised - Even after four weeks of no active COVID-19 cases, no relief is in sight from the virus safety measures.
That was one of the takeaways from the weekly COVID briefing provided Thursday by government officials, Premier Sandy Silver and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health.
Both men said the lengthy period of no infections is very good news, but no cause to let up on the tight health regulations of the last few months.
“We’re very fortunate to be in this position,” Silver said.
“A lull can seem like an opportunity to relax,” Hanley added. “But it’s just a matter of time until we see COVID in the territory again. We must continue to act as if COVID is here.”
Silver said it’s a delicate balancing act between keeping everyone safe and mental health. He noted the variants of the virus popping up are also of concern.
Hanley said, “We have to strike the best balance between restrictions and being human, what we need to thrive and make a living.”
That’s why they’re not willing to even consider loosening restrictions, and re-emphasized they consider sticking with the “Safe Six + 1” to be vital yet.
They made it clear they regard vaccines as being almost a panacea for finally stopping the pandemic, even with supply problems and side effects causing issues.
Silver and Hanley pressed their assertions that everyone in the Yukon who has received their first dose of the Moderna vaccine will be able to receive their second booster in the right time frame.
Those doses are set aside for people, they said. The booking service is not yet open for people to begin making appointments to receive them, something which has not yet been explained by the government.
Silver said the federal government provided another shipment of the vaccine totalling 4,500 doses last weekend.
That’s part of the reduced allotment from Moderna that has forced the closure of the Whitehorse clinic to the general public indefinitely.
“The first-shot clinics could re-open very soon, hopefully,” said Silver.
The premier said he is continuing to press federal officials over the allotment and shipping problems. He said he remains confident the Yukon will receive its full share in a timely fashion in the first quarter of 2021.
Hanley and Silver also attempted to reassure the public the second dose of the Moderna vaccine is perfectly safe, although they acknowledged it’s causing much more noticeable side effects than the first dose. They said they’ve been “hearing rumours and rumblings” about the side effects.
Hanley called that first dose a “primer” for the immune system, while the second dose “kick-starts” it.
Those side effects include fatigue, soreness at the injection site, fever, muscle aches and other symptoms. The symptoms can last for one to three days.
That’s all the sign of the immune system “gearing up” to combat the virus, Hanley said.
“It’s a sign it’s working.”
In one to five per cent of cases, the effects can be severe enough to mimic a COVID infection, Hanley said.
He added people might be well-advised to consider timing their second doses to coincide with a day off work – or perhaps to take a day off.
“The effects will definitely be more noticeable than the first,” Hanley said. “It’s a transient and small reminder. It’s a small price to pay for such good protection.”
Some people will not experience any side effects, he added.
On Monday, the Star reported a significant number of health and social service workers were off the job due to the side effects.
Steve Geick, the president of the Yukon Employees’ Union, said he had received information directly from government sources that up to 60 per cent of workers in some locations were off work last Friday due to the side-effects.
Hanley and Silver denied those numbers at the briefing Thursday, calling them “misinformation”.
They said government numbers – the same source Geick quoted – indicated the absentee rate was more like 10 per cent, which was well within the normal range.
“I was very upset at that,” Hanley said.
No explanation has been provided for the discrepancy in the figures from the same source.
So far, 10,604 doses have been administered to Yukoners. Second doses have been provided to 830 people.
After the briefing, the Star asked Pat Living, a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Services, about whether there are specific benchmarks, criteria or a plan for easing the COVID restrictions.
“He (Hanley) has not listed any specific criteria but is definitely looking at the broader situation about COVID, not just Yukon, when making decisions on what to recommend to government.
“To report there is no plan is wrong. What I said was he had not released specifics.”

So if government is looking that far ahead until our economy will be up off its knees once again, what do they plan to do in this time frame to ensure Yukoners/Canadians do not fall into abject poverty due to a lack of jobs? Banks still want their monthly payments and governments still want their taxes. So what are the brain trusts of government considering? Yes I know they are not motivated like the common folk, they have well paying jobs with lots of benefits and do not feel the financial pinch like most of us do.
It's election time so regale us with your ideas and proposals.

The new variants might be more transmissable, but children are least likely to become sick and least likely to experience severe symptoms. In fact, the risk to children from all covid variants is so low as to not be a concern.
If anything, we should encourage our children to become exposed naturally to covid so their immune systems can learn how to respond to these viruses.

I am enormously grateful to live in the Yukon, where we have skilled public health officials who are protecting us with public health measures.
Look at NFLD, where a case of the variant got into a high school and there were 200 new cases in 48 hrs. If you think we in the Yukon are immune to the variant that is in 10/10 provinces, then you are ingesting unscientific data from too many sources.
For the time being, we need to keep people protected with these measures. And maybe you don’t have kids, but I do. I am leery about them getting covid, which is possible if they are not vaccinated. We don’t know the long term health outcomes of covid on kids. I don’t want to take a risk with the future health of my kids because people are tired of wearing a piece of fabric on their faces and washing their hands.

Don't accept this everyone! For months the message has been that a vaccine is the endpoint of this, we must have these measures in place "until we have a vaccine", etc, etc. Once the 75% target is met, there will be NO justification for any measures to remain.

Acting indeed, but in the interests of WHO (crafty eh)
Wow folks...did the metric democrats ever learn well from their southern counterparts in Bidenia on tactics, like real reeeal well!
I say this ON absolute TOPIC of political control via health crats and their deception.
Newfoundland's top doctor concerned about your ability to keep yourself safe, in a province with good numbers, has JUST locked down that entire province..hmmm...?
Funny thing is, seems they are already screaming for mail in ballots in the very soon election...imagine my shock?
An even funnier thing? Just by absolute coincidence...the sitting Premier there is team red comrade, Andrew Furey? What are the odds eh, like off the charts coincidental eh?
I suspect we may just soon see "the most winning" Liberal election in history in that province. Yes just like that hard fought, well earned record setting vote EVER EVER for a POTUS recently. Hard hard work and campaigning relentlessly going door to door was absolutely the only reason Orange man had gone.
Come on team SS, with all your hard work/grit you can milk this till fall no? Then do the mail in thing, set YLP records...I have faith in your grand deception and the inertia YOU gave it and continue too..."INDEFINITELY"

We've actually got it much better than most places do. But my heart goes out to the seniors. Once the senors' facilities have received their second shot and had two weeks for it to settle in, I believe we need to restore their social lives. The seniors are only existing now, little chance to visit with family, no opportunity to bond with the next generation. It is not life for them!
Once the adults of the territory have had opportunity to be vaccinated, WE MUST OPEN UP! At that point I will open up or be locked up!

How does this hand the election to the Yukon Party? You do realize the Yukon Party (as well as the NDP) is in favor of all the emergency restrictions right? So how would voting for them change anything?
As for Dr.Hanley, it was the Yukon Party who appointed him many years ago so I doubt they will toss him out if they win the election. Sorry to burst your bubble.

All world leaders are in lock step on the COVID fight and no matter what the voices in your head tell you the world leaders ARE NOT conspiring against you.

Covid restrictions for ‘indefinite’ period is complete NONSENSE. Fact is, the great majority of people who got infected by covid-19 only have mild symptoms, or no symptoms. And we should not be coerced into taking an experimental ‘vaccine’ under the threat of continued lockdowns unless a 75% majority take it. That is absolutely unethical.
Our politicians seem to have forgotten that they’re supposed to represent the people who elected them, NOT the globalist puppet Justin Trudeau who is taking us into the WEF “Great Reset” by means of covid restrictions that do way more harm than good.
They’re now using the ‘covid variants’ as a pretext for total indefinite control. People, wake up. The covid restrictions will stop only when people stop complying. It’s up to us.

This information, unfortunately, comes at no surprise. We have been tied, bound and gagged, and unless we start to DEMAND truthful information we will stay enslaved . ... Current death rates are the same as in years prior (ask statistics and coroners). Deaths that do occur more those of the very weak: children (suicide), mentally unstable, drug abuse, unemployed, sick - missed medical care.
Saving people by putting others in jeopardy of death is just making a tyrannical decision on who gets to die and who gets to live. Median age of death from or with Covid is 82 years, with 1-3 comorbidities with 90% dead under awful conditions in nursing homes in Ontario and Quebec. And for that we all get our lives controlled and destroyed?!? I don't think so, dear politicians! I will rise against this!

And still not a peep from our government or local media about the negative effects of the lockdowns and restrictions (overdoses, domestic abuse, suicide, job loss) . Meanwhile, BC's deaths are now at only .024% of the entire population (1,278 out of 5.07M - see the BC Covid dashboard), but they hit an all-time high of drug overdose deaths in 2020: 1716. Up 74% from 2019.

Does anyone read the national and international news before they post negative rhetoric about the local restrictions? Take it with a grain of salt, sure, but still. At this point, we’re keeping the virus out. We can move freely about the territory, do all kinds of outdoor activities and the rest at the small price of covering your face in public and keeping a larger than normal personal space bubble. That’s it. Not a fan myself, but the sacrifices we are making here are a fraction of the suffering occurring worldwide.
Where else do you want to go right now? There’s no flights to the sun unless you pass through a US destination (no thanks) and sit in a government quarantine hotel on the way back. The local economy isn’t going to ratchet up to normal all of a sudden while the outside situation remains roughly the same.
So what are we missing? Bars and pubs and hockey games? And we should put everyone at risk for that? Please...

Patti Eyre - Mr Geick is a politico. You cannot trust politicos because their livelihood depends on their ability to deceive.
Most people fail to understand that they do not have Union rights. Any right belongs to the Collective and they are a matter subject to political interests. The Union Executive has bargained away your rights and the government is well aware of this and they use this to their advantage.
This is why the civil service is in such chaos at the moment. So yes, Geick, has deceived us and he and the Executive have placed its members in jeopardy subject to the whims of poor management.

The vaccine is not a "panacea" . . . never was, and they are lying about it now.
The covid "variants" and the fact that the "vaccine" does not grant immunity is all the b.s. excuse they need to keep us on lockdown until the public has had enough. They have already said as much. They are switching their message up to keep us placated.

This is getting excessive. Yes we have been very lucky to not have cases in the community but it is time to be adaptive and make changes where they need to be done.
Schools are in major need of help. Very few students are successful in the current systems and it puts a massive amount of stress on teachers and many students are being left behind. Why does the department keep pretending like all is well? Talk to any student or any teacher and find out how disruptive this whole thing has been.

No surprises here. The Liberals will never let go. The Conservatives and NDP have been quiet about this. But, there is no reason to maintain martial law, which is what this extended Emergency Measures is. I want one of them to make this an election issue. We have not felt enforcement here, but other provinces have. The door is open. Eventually, the temptation to walk through it will be too great and Silver will start enforcing all the measures available though this Act.
