PRE-COVID MERRIMENT – Crowds line Main Street for the Santa Claus parade held Dec. 7, 2019.
Santa Claus is coming to town – or rather to your neighbourhood.
Santa Claus is coming to town – or rather to your neighbourhood.
In these unprecedented times, organizers of the annual Santa Claus parade have come up with an alternative to the traditional parade down Main Street to avoid large gatherings.
For the first time, the Winterval Santa Claus Parade of Lights will pass through several neighbourhoods between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
Angela Drainville, a volunteer organizer, said in an interview this week that a normal year would see between 3,000 and 4,000 residents gather along Main and Front streets to catch a glimpse of Santa.
With the requirement to maintain physical distancing, it’s just not possible to hold a normal parade, even if the event is outside, she said.
Drainville said Anne Turner of Yukon Women in Mining began considering alternatives back in September and came up with a plan to have Santa travel through the city.
“So this way, folks are going to be able to see the parade right in their own neighbourhoods so they don’t have to come downtown,” she said.
Drainville said they normally have between 30 and 35 floats, and as of Wednesday, there were 32 signed up.
Santa and the floats will marshal at the snow dump along Robert Service Way, across from Yukon Energy.
The parade will first move through Riverdale at 5 p.m. along Nisutlin Drive, then onto the Alsek Road loop before heading downtown along Second Avenue and onto Main Street, where Santa will stop to light the tree at the end of Main, as he does every year. Lighting of the tree will be broadcast on Facebook Live.
The parade will make its way up Mountainview Drive to Range Road, past the mobile home parks and on to Whistle Bend.
There, the route will take them past Whistle Bend Place to provide an opportunity for residents to see Santa and the parade.
It will move through Porter Creek, back down Mountainview, back along Range Road then up Hamilton Boulevard.
It will pass through the McIntyre subdivision before heading through Arkell, Copper Ridge – being sure to pass by Copper Ridge Place – and Granger.
The specific route and estimated times of arrival can be found at the Facebook page Whitehorse Winterval Santa Parade.
Drainville said the parade will not be disrupting traffic, and will be following the rules of the road.
They will be assisted by Whitehorse bylaw officers, but for the most part, they’ve designed the route to avoid right-hand turns.
They decided not to travel along the Alaska Highway, so visits to the Crestview and Hillcrest subdivisions aren’t possible, though presumably Crestview residents would travel to Porter Creek to see Santa, she explained.
Drainville said several vehicles in the parade will be equipped with radios to help keep everything together.
Santa, as always, will anchor the parade, she said.
Parade organizers announced Thursday that Victoria Gold Corp. has signed on as a key partner and sponsor with a $10,000 donation to the event.
The money will benefit the Yukon Imagination Library’s volunteer efforts on behalf of family literacy throughout the territory.
“The parade will also allow Whitehorse residents of all ages to take in and enjoy the creatively decorated floats safely, while physically distanced, from their homes and neighbourhoods,” says the announcement.
“Victoria Gold is delighted to support this year’s parade and its efforts on behalf of the Yukon
Imagination Library,” said John McConnell, Victoria Gold’s president & CEO.
“Our entire team appreciates everyone who has come together to make this magical event happen this year, and we extend our very best wishes to Yukoners along the route and around the territory for a very happy and healthy holiday season.”

I love how this lighthearted article has resulted in so many fruitless arguments/comments. Does everything have to be turned into a political debate? In the words of Charlie Brown, "good grief".

JC-Josey Wales@ Looks like my Hammer hit a button. Jeremiah 23:29 'Is not my word like a fire? Saith the Lord; and like a Hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces'. You boys sound like true Christians, no doubt you'll be out carol singing. Merry Christmas. We had loads of fun at Christmas, stockings full of fruit, favorite comics, lucky for me I had five older sisters. Charles Dickens movies.
I must say you chaps sound a little Scroogy. Truth, you say. New Ager hmm, you sound like Reds under the bed throw backs to McCarthyism. Maybe what you need is 'The Hammer of the Witches'.
I remember my first day at school, April 1950, Easter time, we always got new clothes and new sandals at Easter, related to re-birth symbolism. Traditional festivities are so important for children.

No Hammer, It's you and your new agers that have the problem. I remember Christmas and winter fun back in the 40s and 50s. Were you around then, eh? And the children need the truth since they are getting nothing but lies in this generation. It may not be pleasant, but they need the truth so, when they grow up they may bring sanity back. For their sakes I hope they make it. So, Hammer, if you don't have any truth to tell them, maybe it's because you've been "reset" already.

Hammer & Sickle....there is much truth to your words, left out mushrooms and tripping out though in said time.
Odin eh, yes but you must be new here (maybe) the SJW morality mobs ran Odin's crew outta town.
The Ministry of Culture did not approve, mobs lit there torches and cried like wee babies.
I stand by my participation and only a virtue signaling moron would "project" I care not. This projection is spot on Hammer & Sickle, why do you HATE freedom and individual thought, expression?
Are you the brakeman in the cattle car stockyards, do you turn on the shower?
Or merely play Judas out here in Cyber Virtue Land?
intellectually, you are no hammer, nor Sickle as it needs a edge.

Josey wales@ Nothing merry about your comment. Santa Claus is pre Christian Nordic Shamanism, that has survived your unusual bitter brand of Christianity. It's about mastery over ice and fire, traveling through space with his helpful animals and spirit elves, bringing good cheer and feasting around Odin's yule tide log, in an ancient fire ceremony at the winter solstice when the light returns.

JC@ I don't think you know the meaning of fun, based on your predictions for the end of the world. Let us hope that no children get to read your comment. it is filled with fear, hatred and lies, and is an attack on the PM as though he's responsible for a global takeover, and is the personification of evil. You have a serious problem.

Hmmm....I get the $anta angle, but how does a person write such a lengthy article on "Santa" without once mentioning CHRISTMAS?
Seems we are all in alignment of our language, lest we offend "someone"?
JC... having fun is for free peoples, we are merely authorized to gather in a now "cultural" event to benefit the overlords.
Remember folks...spend, spend, obey, obey and you will be "*free" one day HEY!
Remember the "two weeks" they needed from us?
Once taken, zealots never give it back...we must absolutely TAKE it back.
...and soon.
*as written in the We Are in Charge Act, free will be defined at a later date by the ministry of culture.
clic clic
MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone, yes even $anta.

That's right Libs, take all the fun out of our children's lives. Over a stupid control program from a virus that has less danger than the seasonal flu. But hey, JT has a global reset planned for Canada. And this is just the beginning folks. So, keep voting for the Marxist Libs for more control surprises.
