COVID-19 variant has entered the territory

Two new COVID-19 cases were announced late Thursday afternoon by Yukon medical officials.

By Tim Giilck on March 26, 2021

Two new COVID-19 cases were announced late Thursday afternoon by Yukon medical officials.

According to a news release, Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, has confirmed the cases – including the Yukon’s first case of a variant of concern.

Case #73 is someone who resides in Whitehorse and who is linked to international travel.

It is not known when or how the person arrived back in Whitehorse.

“Existing federal processes were followed including COVID-19 testing at time of arrival in Canada,” the release states.

“There is a presumptive positive for a variant of concern. The specific type of variant is not yet known and the sample is undergoing further testing.

“The individual is doing well and has been in self-isolation since arriving in Yukon.”

The second incident is not considered a Yukon case, as it was found in a non-Yukon resident who arrived in the territory last Sunday.

Yukon Communicable Disease Control (YCDC) was contacted by another jurisdiction.

This case has tested positive for B.1.1.7, and is linked to an outbreak in another jurisdiction.

The individual is doing well and has been in self-isolation since arriving in the territory.

The other jurisdiction is not identified. The location in the Yukon where the person is staying is not named.

This morning, Pat Living, a spokesperson for Hanley, attempted to clarify the situation, since the release is ambiguous on several points.

“No they did not travel together,” she told the Star by email.

“Case 73 (the Whitehorse resident) was not infectious while traveling.”

According to federal regulations, that status made continued travel acceptable.

The second person – who had not received test results – arrived in the Yukon via an Air North flight from Vancouver.

Living explained that “all jurisdictions have different criteria for individuals waiting for test results. We require self isolation until results are received. We would not know the second individual had been tested.”

That person evidently didn’t offer to Yukon officials the information that he or she was awaiting test results. The territory was informed by health officials in the original jurisdiction.

The variant in question is commonly known as the United Kingdom variant. It is considered to be far more contagious than the original form of COVID-19, and possibly more lethal.

However, the Moderna vaccine being used in the Yukon is rated as being effective against it.

“We anticipated that we would see variants of concern, like B.1.1.7 in Yukon at some point and we are prepared to handle it,” Hanley said in the release.

“We can be thankful that both of these individuals have taken the proper precautions with self-isolation, and with the quick work of Yukon Communicable Disease Control, we will be able to control these cases and prevent any spread.

“This is a reminder that Yukoners must remain vigilant. COVID-19 is always lurking around the corner.”

The incidents prompted the territory to issue an exposure notice.

People may have been exposed to COVID-19 infection if they were on the following flight last Sunday: Air North flight Vancouver to Whitehorse, flight number 4N574, 6:40 p.m. (PST) to 8:41 p.m. (PST).

Why does Hanley never speak of actual facts, like these:

"Even though New York has one of the strictest mask mandates in the country, and one-third of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, COVID-19 infection rates are rising faster than any other state in the U.S."

Please note that everyone can come to Canada. It says, borders are closed, no one can come to Canada, EXCEPT.. read the list. Everyone can come to Canada. Even TFWs. There are caveats on that of course. But, i can't see where anyone is not exempt, the 1 million + everyone that's sick, elderly, related, coming in on the Family Reunification Program, refugee's/migrants/immigrants/illegals that Trudeau is bringing in.

"Canada: The land border between the United States and Canada will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least 21 April 2021. From 7 January 2021, at 12.01am EST, all air passengers traveling to Canada, who are five years or older, will be required to test negative for COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the country. Passengers must present evidence of a negative laboratory test result to their airline prior to boarding a flight to Canada. The test must be performed using a COVID-19 molecular polymerase chain reaction (or PCR) test and must be taken within 72 hours prior to the traveler’s scheduled departure to Canada.

Anyone who receives a negative test result and is authorized to enter Canada must still complete the full, mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Most foreign nationals are banned from entering Canada. Exemptions include Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or their immediate families, temporary foreign workers, and some international students. If you're a foreign national (not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada), you won't be able to enter if you have COVID-19 symptoms. Arrivals must provide contact information, undergo screening by a border official, and quarantine or self-isolate for 14 days.

DL, where's the lockdown? on Mar 30, 2021 at 7:25 am

In the past few days, I've gone shopping, had dinner with friends, mailed parcels, been to CGC, had lunch at a restaurant, picked up kids at school (because classes are fully in session) etc etc ... so if we're in a lockdown, it's a pretty loose one. And DL, your reference to a 'medical oath' is something President Trump spewed after hearing it on Fox News, guess he thought it was catchy.

Checking with people in the know, Trudeau government knew in October 2019 about this but did nothing until March 2020 when it came out all over the world and then liberals tried to buy vaccine from China where the CV19 came from.
Does that make any common sense Yukoners? Europe jumped on it back in December of 2019.

If Canada had jumped on it earlier we could have been much better prepared for the problem. Trudeau blames everything on someone else like Harper and just a few days ago Bryan M who been out of power since the 1990's.

We have to face it, voting in liberals who are supported by NDP is destroying Yukoners future.

I was with you till you got stupid.
For starters it’s not a VACCINE!!!
I have been vaccinated for TB, Hep A+B, Polio, Yellow Fever and some other stuff for African travel. So I am protected from these viruses.
When you get this INJECTION, you can still get the Covid-19 and transmit it as well.
Your not very well protected. So,
Why should I a Healthy, Fit and handsome man, subject myself to this experiment that BAHH you sheeple have subjected yourselves too?
Shame on me!!! Here’s a stat for everyone.
71 is the average intelligence I.Q. And boys and girls, 71 is not the bright. Roughly 75% of the population fits into this Category. Oh wait, and 75% of the herd needs to be vaccinated to remove the restrictions. Huh, seeing a trend here.

It's time to end the fear-mongering. Every adult that wants to be vaccinated has had a chance to be. They are now taking walk-ins. We are a "fully vaccinated" community. We need to start acting like it:
- NO MORE 14 DAY ISOLATION
- OPEN UP THE SENIOR'S HOMES
- No more masks
- No more crowd restrictions.

And if the virus settles in in the Yukon:
- It won't hurt those of us who are vaccinated,
- It won't kill our kids, because COVID doesn't kill kids.
- It'll only affect those who have been unwilling to get vaccinated -- shame on you!

I'M DONE WITH COVID RESTRICTIONS!

And what legitimacy do you think a doctor gives to a pseudo-Marshall-law for which the medical evidence does not exist and is controversial where it does? Why are we allowing stupid to shape the societal narrative? Why are we allowing greater harm in the name of medical-fascism?
So, truck off with your emotionalism in the form of those “brave souls” in the medical industry - No one in their right mind with knowledge of the actual evidence would support this arrogant stupidity... Something about wolves in sheep’s clothing I think..

@John, staying at that international “ covid hotel” on return is only required for travelers returning via air travel. It’s not required for cross via the land border. And before you say but the land border is closed.. they can’t refuse Canadian citizens into Canada so your allowed to cross into Canada as a citizen.

Mask wearing, hand washing, track and trace, voluntary testing of symptomatic people, voluntary testing of travellers... all of these are legally justified.

Infringements on our CCRF rights, particularly Sections 6 through 9, are no longer legally reasonable or justifiable for fully vaccinated citizens. Section 9 in particular secures Canadians against arbitrary detention. Therefore, only those who are medically diagnosed to have COVID-19 as confirmed through a blood test can be mandated to quarantine. Detention at international borders is different as the CCRF does not apply until you are admitted to Canada by officials. Travel within Canada is free and cannot be restricted.

These two have done nothing illegal. In fact, it’s the regulations that violate the law. I passed through the land border yesterday without cooperating. Looking forward to being charged.
Respectfully Doctor, I’ll see you in court.

Now that all Yukoners that wanted the vaccine have received it, they should feel they’re protected by it. So, there is no longer any reason to maintain any covid restrictions. Young people and children are hardly affected by covid, and even the WHO has stated that asymptomatic transmission is “rare”.
Open up already. No mask mandate.

Remember, the Yukon 72 ‘covid cases’ all recovered at home (if they were even sick at all…). The one death that this LibGov claims was from covid, did in fact die at home alone. There is no evidence that this unfortunate person died of covid, only that he tested positive for covid. He had a number of serious pre-existing conditions. Please stick to the facts, stop the fearmongering.

Lockdowns are unsustainable, and cause way more harm than the virus ever did. Medical doctors are bound to an oath stating that the cure must not be worse than the disease. If Brendan Hanley was upholding his medical oath, he would weigh in the increasing rates of depression, overdoses, suicides, neglected health issues, domestic violence, child abuse, high rates of mental health issues among school children that have been caused by the lockdowns. But not a word from him about these issues. Brendan Hanley is no epidemiologist or virologist. His decrees are eerily similar to Bill Gates’ edicts. Follow the money.

Look up the “Great Barrington Declaration” signed by over 55,000 medical scientists and practitioners cautioning against lockdowns negative impacts, and advocating better solutions, such as ‘focused protection’ of vulnerable people.

Up 43 Down 14

Ross on Mar 27, 2021 at 2:36 pm

Personally, I would not use the word “lurking” to describe a virus that everyone knows exists.

I would however, use the word “lurking” to describe non-elected government medical bureaucrats, basking in their newfound fame and power, fixated on covid case count narratives, propagating irrational fear and perpetuating an endless over-reaction regardless of the collateral damage that is piling up.

Of course this is only happening because elected leadership in Yukon and elsewhere are deferring responsibility for decisions onto them because they don’t have the courage themselves to be open, candid and accountable to the public. Endless platitudes, condescending childish reminders and secrecy is what the public gets.

Truth is, they are in pursuit of votes and public favour, even as it becomes more and more clear that what they are doing is causing more harm than good. If the majority of the general public is misguided and wants restrictions that do more harm than good... that's what our “leaders” will give us.

I really believe the tide is turning though and I hope that more and more people pay attention to the real facts, statistics and evidence, including devastation caused by restrictions. At the very least, we should hold elected leaders accountable when it's time to vote.

This isn’t about being afraid of the virus.
This isn’t about some global conspiracy blah blah blah vaccines.
This is not about losing your freedoms.
This is about not overloading our health care system with Covid cases that require hospitalization.
The facts are that while the mortality rate is low, there would be a great number that would require intensive care. The Yukon couldn’t handle the numbers, even if they were relatively low. Imagine WGH intensive care full of Covid patients, and then imagine a large car crash. What happens then?
You can bet that the people howling about their loss of freedoms would be howling even louder if they or their kids were denied hospital care because it was already full of Covid patients.
Stop thinking only of yourselves.

Canadian company LifeLabs - www.lifelabs.com developed an internationally recognized test for Covid immunity. Millions of tests have been done. However the CMO will not permit this test for Yukoners.

This should make us question what the government's real agenda is. It appears that the LIBgov is afraid to discover that more than 75% of us are immune to Covid, and therefore the restrictions should be ended immediately.

This government thinks they can keep controlling our lives with their endless "emergency restrictions", but it's time to tell them NO, we can decide what prevention measures we want to take for ourselves and our families.
End the restrictions, vote for change. Don't wait for voting day, avoid the crowds and vote now by special ballot at the returning office in your riding.

I notice all the down arrows to these positive freedom loving commenters. I guess Silver has his staff busy doing the down arrows. Most Canadians have had quite enough of Marxism in Canada. It's time to bring back freedom and democracy.
Many people may not like it, but the Conservatives and the People's Party are the only two parties in Canada that are attempting to stamp out political Marxism and Fascism.
Those who think this ideology is great, talk to someone who has lived under it. Time to get educated.

More fear mongering

Endless pandering, waffling, and evasiveness. The person didn't disclose they were awaiting test results. Interesting, because I thought such a declaration was necessary in order to board a plane to the Yukon. Is withholding such information a crime? Does this individual get charged and end up in jail at some point?

Are the rest of us chumps, having lined up for the vaccine in good faith, so that we could all be let out of jail sooner rather than later?
Utterly shameful, inept leadership that is going to pay a massive price at the polls shortly. Unbelievable.
