A 10th person has died from COVID-19 in the Yukon.
Revised - A 10th person has died from COVID-19 in the Yukon.
Meanwhile, the situation in Carcross with its COVID-19 outbreak appears to be worsening.
Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health, reported the death Monday afternoon. Her office does not release details about fatal COVID cases.
There are currently 35 active cases of COVID-19 in the territory, with 15 cases confirmed since noon last Friday.
Among these new cases are nine in Carcross, one in Watson Lake, four in Whitehorse and one in Burwash Landing/Destruction Bay. Both the Delta variant and the Gamma variant are circulating in the Yukon.
Exposure notices have been issued to Grades 8 and 9 at Watson Lake Secondary School in Watson Lake and a daycare in Carcross. Yukon Communicable Disease Control has provided specific directions to affected people.
“My sincere condolences go out to the family members of the individual who most recently died from COVID-19. Any loss is devastating for family members and, when it is from COVID-19, it is a blow to those who are working so hard to keep everyone safe,” Elliott said.
On Tuesday afternoon, Elliott issued a news release strongly recommending that Carcross residents wear a mask in all indoor public spaces.
“I am concerned about early signs of community transmission of COVID in the Carcross community and know that community leaders share my concern,” Elliott said. “Wearing a mask is one step to help keep everyone safe.
“I must also ask people who are ill or who have a person with COVID-19 in their household to also stay home and prevent the further spread of disease.”
The release added, “This strong recommendation is based on early signs of community transmission within Carcross and an outbreak being declared at the school last week.
“The majority of positive cases in the past two weeks have been in Carcross, including among school-aged children and their families.”
With the Delta variant circulating widely in southern jurisdictions and spreading in-territory, with Yukoners travelling more frequently now than last year, and with flu season fast approaching, it is more important than ever to take steps to protect oneself, one’s family and community from the spread of COVID-19,” the release added.
During one of the last regular media briefings – since cancelled – reporters were told determining whether each case is a Delta case is time-consuming, so health officials assume that variant is present and act accordingly.

"Her office does not release details about fatal COVID cases"
Heaven forbid they share any facts that go against the narrative.
What human rights violations will come next based on the secret data?

No-transparency from government..... then no wonder why the RCMP is not getting people coming forward for the many robberies around town.

Jean: Does you comment have anything to do with the news story? Just asking, because I didn't see any relevance to it.

It's horrible that we've gotten to a point where a majority of people feel they have the right and permission to bash the minority of people who choose, for whatever reason, to support pro choice. I call those people " selective pro choice" as long as it works for you- or in other words-selfish. Talk about disrespect, reminds of numerous points in history we bashed minorities and we so sorely regret it now. What a shame.

As reported...” A 10th person has died from COVID-19 in the Yukon.“
If the new queen bee in our hive reports that to us?
Would seem very obvious her office does release details in fatalities.
How folks leave this world is the exclusive business of those immediate family members and close associates that loved them dearly.
Even that list could be edited to an exclusive few, not the general public.
However it does serve political purpose to squeak a wee bit of info to KEEP the fear upfront, stokes the furnace of division, illustrates at least to me we have yet another liberal talking head.
Hey doc, ya threw us that bone...let us have a conversation on co-morbidities, the many trails the reaper can take one down?
Naaaah the state dictates...why asks a mere subject, a filthy peasant...a commoner ma lord?
...with COVID-19 most probably NOT of COVID-19.
My speculation I speculate is more accurate than any state voodoo data... tainted from day one of this political theatre.
Any federal agents confiscating or banning pop, booze, tobacco, weed, cheeseburgers or potato chips, candy or anything with sugar?
Any federal agents busting down doors, pulling folks off the couch away from Facebook or their geek boxes, welding fridges shut and at risk of arrest...force folks to exercise?
Is the state going to mandate BMI Cards, barring any non essential food access or restaurant entry?
Think while it is still barely legal please folks... OJW PSA

As typical with government bureaucrats, don't give details. Details bring out the truth and they sure don't want that.

It's very likely this person was "vaccinated" otherwise they would be saying the person was unvaxed and would be bleating the "get yer shot" mantra.
This govt is only transparent and forthcoming when it suits their needs.

The government is too far down the rabbit hole to turn back. They need to admit vaccinated or unvaccinated if you get COVID there’s a possibility you will end up in ICU or you will be fine.

Died from or died with? There’s a difference.
Regardless, Condolences to the family.

Or maybe she's finally realized that there are those who, no matter what, will dig in their heels and somehow think 'no one can tell me what I should or shouldn't do'. It's called cutting off one's nose to spite the face, but oh well. Thank goodness the vast majority of people here have gotten vaccinated.

Let me guess, unvaccinated? Since it’s not stated I guess the writing is on the wall. Because if they weren’t vaccinated you’d know it would be mentioned.
